Key league win but cup exit for Viking
Viking South Utsira took a real stride towards a possible Xpert Ladies top-flight place for the first time ever by completing a fine midseason double over rivals The Norfolk Broads this past Tuesday. After a cagey first half at the Etihad Phoned Home stadium, two goals in four minutes early in the second period from Utsiran strike pair Irja Klovning and Anneke Hovland took the game away from the Norfolk side, and Viking hung on for a key victory.

With their other main challengers Queers United held 1-1 at home by Laholms FK, the result meant that the Blood Eagles have suddenly pulled seven points clear of Queers and eight ahead of the Broads. Next though comes yet another huge task, as VelvetAndroid's side host United in another top-of-the-table collision with the chance to pull still further clear but the threat of having their lead slashed. It bears noting that the reverse fixture was the only league game in which they have dropped points so far this term.

Alas, VSU's 16-match undefeated streak this season was finally snapped on Saturday -- though in not unexpected circumstances. In the 5th round of the Xpert Ladies Cup Android's women gave as good as they got against a Peach Blossoms side sitting 2nd in the top tier, and even recovered from the Australians's Sally Adelberg breaking the deadlock in the 84th minute thanks to Yulia Austrheim's 87th-minute penalty to take the tie into extra time.

In the very first of the 30 added minutes however the two-time finalists and two-time league champions were promptly awarded a spot-kick of their own, and Beverley Morbyd slotted home from 12 yards to end the Norsewomen's cup dreams for the season. All attention thus turns to the promotion bid as Viking attempt to close in on a place among the elite for the first time in their history.
