Horror injury mars latest Viking loss |
After a semi-encouraging series of performances in early season where Viking North Utsire at least managed a simulacrum of competitiveness in the Ultimate League top flight, the last two weeks have seen reality reassert itself and no mistake. A 12-minute treble blast from this Monday's visitors Square Hammer, two goals from Levi Madsar followed by one from Sylvester Löfberg putting them out of sight by the 25-minute mark, was the worst spell Viking have had all term. Five minutes later things got worse again, when midfielder Johan Kvalvik -- who had never missed a day injured in his 10-season career -- was stretchered off with a horror injury that will rule him out of most of the rest of the season.
The shellshocked Norsemen regathered themselves and fought back into the game a little after the break, and for the second week running they bagged a consolation, rookie forward Xavier Klovning slotting his maiden senior goal in the 66th minute, but it was again much too little too late and VelvetAndroid's side are now firmly rooted to the bottom of the table as the campaign reaches its halfway stage.
The Utsirans' ongoing participation in the UL Cup hangs in the balance too, after a 1-1 draw last Friday at Piston Broke in the first leg of their fourth-round tie. After David Austrheim had an opener chalked off in the 34th minute the hosts swept straight down the other end and scored through Asdrúbal Duarte, but Johan Kvalvik was able to level just before the hour with Viking's only legitimate shot. Regrettably he will take no part in the return leg this Friday or, almost certainly, in the rest of this season's Cup.
