Codnor storms back - survives relegation |
On March 27, Codnor was firmly on the bottom of division 1b with 5 losses and only 2 draws, having scored 2 goals and conceded 12. Relegation and return to division 2 seemed inevitable, and both players and the manager seemed disinterested.
The 451 formation with legendary Davor Kralj as the sole striker, which manager Zile favored throughout Codnor's climb through the divisions, was not working anymore. Even worse, it seemed that there was little that could be done since Kralj is the only division 1 quality striker in the squad.
Zile decided to cash in on two of his younger players, a free kick defender and a stamina striker, and use the cash to begin the rebuilding process in the next season.
With a shrunken squad he then started mixing his tactical approach in order to give playing time to some of his youngsters - and started winning.
It all started with a somewhat fortunate victory at Tuga with the only goal of the game scored by the defender, Acevedo. Zile kept changing the formation almost every game and Codnor stormed back into relegation survival contention with 3 more wins in the next 5 games.
On the final day of the season Codnor needed a win against FC Besta and the results to go their way in the other games. And that's exactly what happened. Codnor smashed the disinterested Besta 8-1 and ended the season in 5th place.
And so, the once disinterested manager Zile found his passion for Codnor again and decided to sign a contract extension, which was a big question mark before the season began.
