African Spears - 5 year journey |
The African Spears more than just survived their XCL semifinal, against multiple trophy winners and former XCL champions - The Antichrists - they managed to grab a goal and hold on for a 1-0 win.
Going into the XCL through the back door as cup runners up, being drawn in a group dubbed as the "group of death", having a manager inexperienced in the XCL, the Spears were written off by most of the XCL pundits.
With the odds stacked against them, the Spears sneaked through the group stages, most notably scrapping two difficult 0-0 draws with FC Botosani, and spectacularly handing the current holders of the XCL SparkaSpring a rare defeat. The road to the semi final was further obstructed by the Number 1 ranked manager on the site, MarioMeirelles, and only a sound defensive performance got the Spears through to the semi-finals..
Having come this far, and picked up the scalps of famous managers and seemingly unbeatable powerhouse teams, the manager is more than happy with the teams performance should their XCL campaign end this Wednesday.
With a massive Euro League cup quarter final against fellow XCL semi-finalists, Imperium Sine Fine, on Monday, the Spears face a tough decision on whether to focus on their XCL semi final or try to go all out for a win in the cup with a full strength team. With a place in next season's XCL far from secure, and three key players walking the suspension tightrope - it will be a decision that may decide the fate of the season.
Manager Sherwyn commented: "Whatever happens next week, we stand proud of our achievements. To compete in the XCL was a 5 year project. We did not envision us playing this deep into the XCL in our first attempt - whatever the resul t- we have made our mark, and provided some inspiration to all team building managers"
