Panda-baiting and bench pondering
Silvino Boim strides forwards and stands calmly on the penalty spot, holding the ball firmly in his hands. In the squawking zoo that is Giant Panda's Bamboo Arena, Boim wants no monkey business before he takes the penalty kick. Finally the ref Beback is satisfied and blows his whistle. Boim places the ball, takes one step back, points to one corner, winks at the keeper and hits the ball to the other side.
"GOOOOAAAL!" Matchstick Men manager Tony Brazil screams himself hoarse along with the travelling fans.
It is the 14th minute of the match and Matchstick Men are ahead 1-0 thanks to the penalty. Pandas have no reply as Matchstick keep up the pressure and within fifteen minutes they are two up, this time from a corner as Costamera heads in. The goal celebration can be interpreted as a mockery of the film Kung Fu Panda.
"Another tense second half," Brazil grits his teeth as the score remains the same and Panda make a double substitution. A few minutes later Redde is injured, and Mister is sent on as a replacement.
"Why not me boss?" MacCaw ponders, "I've sat on this bench for this very moment all season and you don't use me. Why did you even buy me?"
"You were bought so my good players could be rested in the cup games, and you were as cheap as chips," Brazil lays it on the line, "we got knocked out of the cup early so you are a bit of an embarrassment, but you are still cheap as chips."
The final whistle blows and Matchstick Men have won away at last season's champions, the mighty Giant Pandas. Among the cheering and celebrations Brazil has time to fire a comment toward MacCaw, "we're top of the league so enjoy this stuff pal, there's worse places to be right now."
