From hero to villain
Leroux Roudier stands stock still by the penalty spot, either in shock at missing his attempt or taking in his last memories of Estadio Lucifer. His was the sixth penalty to be taken by Matchstick Men as their fourth round cup tie has reached this stage. All ten penalties before had been scored before his miss.
Ankarmons player Guerriero steps up, Roudier and the Matchsticks know this is their last hope. If Guerriero misses then it is back to all square in the sudden death and Roudier's failure won't seem so bad. Guerriero hits the ball straight down the middle and as the net ripples Matchstick Men drop out of the cup.
"Three seasons ago Roudier was a hero," reflects Matchstick Men manager Tony Brazil, "he won the most valuable player award for the division, and our supporters player of the year award. He could do no wrong and also was excellent at mentoring the kids.
"Now listen to the boos being thrown at him. Roudier has gone from hero to villain in a day, and as he is retiring at the end of this season this may be his last outing in a Matchstick shirt. Ironically," Brazil shrugs, "he could be bowing out with a title-winners medal as amazingly we are top of the top division at the halfway stage.
"His penalty miss today could even help us win the title, as going out of the cup early is a blessing in disguise, so lets not judge him too harshly," plaudits Brazil, "on the other hand lets do, or fingers of blame may point at my penalty kicker list as the problem; asking why Roudier was taking this crucial penalty in the first place. So boo Roudier, boo!"
