The Ultimate Comeback
So, last season saw the end of the Pandas and a changing of the guard in the Ultimate League as two newly promoted teams, Stiinta Bacau and Grand Rapids FC, fought out a title battle which went right up until the penultimate day when the two faced each other. Of course, Grand Rapids are former Ultimate League champions themselves but the two men who fought out the title battle had never won before. And after English speaking countries dominated the Ultimate League for 9 seasons, beginning with Damocles’ title win in Season 23, taking through Cricket Utd, AC Samba, Grand Rapids FC and of course, Jesus and his Pandas, the league returned to its roots with a Romanian manager taking the spoils yet again. Not only that, but two main contenders during the Pandas era slipped out of the top flight altogether, to be replaced by a relic of the league’s past managing one of three new teams to the top flight.

It’s time for a new chapter in the Ultimate League’s history, with a new status quo and new title holders. How will the contenders fare? Let’s look at them in a bit more detail.

Dave FC
Manager: Metallica4
Key Player: Krisitan Ebejer

For the first time since Season 26, a new team sits top of the league before a ball has even been kicked. AC Samba hogged that top spot for seven consecutive seasons but now it belongs to Dave FC. Cup finalists last season, Dave FC’s stay in the top flight doesn’t look like it will be for long as their goalkeeper, Aco Vasic, is 33 and they are teetering on the edge of suffering from average age issues. However, they have cash to burn, as evidenced by new signing Daniel Winckler who replaces Rogerio Oldair in the squad and looks likely to keep Petrovic on the bench. It’s Kristian Ebejer though that is likely to be their key man.

Grand Rapids F.C
Manager: W_A_R
Key Player: Percival Leadbeater

GR  FC pushed Stiinta nearly all the way last time only to come up short against them. Regardless, W_A_R will be looking to go one better this season and he has one of the strongest squads in the entire Ultimate League to do it with, with 3 17 bar players in defence and three powerful midfielders in Ragnarsson, Warg and Revell.

Guerrilla Renegades
Manager: CRaPoLoGy
Key Player: Allen MacLaren

This will be Crap’s 6th season in charge of the Renegades but despite a very strong squad, they’ve failed to find the consistency needed to challenge for the league and narrowly survived relegation on the final day last time out. One can only wonder what lies in store for them this season.

Jesus and his Pandas
Manager: Jesus1983
Key Player: Freddie Alnerud

After four glorious trophy-laden seasons it all came crashing down for Jesus and his Pandas last season as they found themselves going into a last day showdown to avoid relegation. The team had gone as far as it would go and as average age caught up on them, youths had to be played in every position. Another relegation battle is on the cards for the Pandas with new multiple youths transitioning a squad rebuild from the old guard to the new guard, but in Freddie Alnerud they have the best goalkeeper in the UL so they just might be able to stay up.

RAK
Manager: Telgeboys
Key Player: Gorgen Lidqvist

I don’t know who the last Swedish manager to make the Ultimate League top flight was, it hasn’t been a majorly represented nation in this league despite the game’s Swedish origins, but nevertheless, the Swedes have a representative in Telgeboys, who won promotion to the top flight in dramatic style with a final day victory being enough to overtake long time leaders Falkirk Flyers. Unfortunately for them their goalkeeper is terribly weak, but they have two outstanding midfielders in Jorge Jorge and Gorgen Lidqvist, the latter a free kick taker, which should help reduce the opportunities the opposition has to get at their goalkeeper. However, the keeper situation could become problematic if they end up in a title battle.

Steppenwolf Suckers:
Manager: Neno4
Key Player: Christian Eriksen/Constantino Mamora

How’s about this for a return? Steppenwolf Suckers have never been in the top flight before, but their manager has. Not only that, but he has won it. As far back as Season 4 when FC Kumonovo won the Ultimate League, Neno4 was the man who guided them to that triumph. He’s back with a squad that’s teetering on the old side in midfield so the likes of Christian Eriksen and Constantino Mamora will be key to keeping the team’s average age down while their midfield strength is up. With a new goalkeeper in Max Dungastown, it would be dangerous to write them off.

Stiinta Bacau
Manager: Stoicem
Key Player: Florin Strugure

Stoicem showed great resilience last season to beat off the stronger Grand Rapids side to the title last season and the club is now dressed in a new kit with a new logo. However, the squad is very old, only being competitively viable by the presence of Puiu Brumariu and Florin Strugure. If their of them get injured then Stiinta may struggle, but Stoicem didn’t win an Ultimate League title for nothing…

The Rod Squad:
Manager: Rodturner
Key Player: Hardy Rodgerson

Survived by the skin of their teeth on goal difference last time out against AC Samba who were relegated, more consistency is needed from Squad this season otherwise they could find themselves facing the drop. Marco Antonio Ferreira has improved noticeably, but one of their key men, Dwight Prenderville’s is now 36 years of age. Whether that will count against him remains to be seen.

Right then, let’s get down to the action:

ROUND 1

Stiinta Bacau 2-1 RAK (Graffman ’33, Hanus ‘92) (Mamic ’76)
Jesus and his Pandas 1-1 Guerrilla Renegades (Abella ’63) (Havlykke ’24)
The Rod Squad 2-1 Steppenwolf Suckers (Acombley ’30, Mario ‘81) (Eriksen ’91)
Dave FC 1-1 Grand Rapids FC (Winkler ’74) (Evers ’21)

It was a baptism of fire for RAK as their first game was away to Ultimate League champions Stiinta Bacau. The hosts took the lead through Ingmar Graffman and they thought they’d doubled it through Ed McImage, but that was ruled out. Despite the onslaught and having the weakest first choice goalkeeper in the division, Edwan Wan Dor Lippen dealt with most that came his way and RAK even struck an equaliser thanks to Zdravko Mamic. Stiinta had been stunned in their own backyard, was this the curse of the Swedish conspiracy again? Well, hold that thought, because RAK then had Gorge Lidqvist sent off in the 90th minute and Stiinta scored a late free kick through Edvard Hanus. So maybe the game isn’t so biased towards Swedish teams after all…

Another newly promoted side in Dave FC had to face runners-up Grand Rapids, albeit the Silent Hill arena was the venue for their first ever top flight match. Mike Evers gave Grand Rapids the lead in the 21st minute, but Dave FC’s new signing Daniel Winkler scored on his debut after turning in Olivio Rui Costa’s cross. A bad start for W_A_R’s team but a golden point for Dave FC on their debut.

Steppenwolf Suckers meanwhile had a somewhat lighter fixture against The Rod Squad who’d only narrowly survived relegation last season. Nevertheless, Squad took the lead through Lesley Acombley, but Steppenwolf Suckers were right in the mix. Custodio Mario however doubled the lead. Christian Eriksen (no relation to the Spurs player) pulled one back for the Suckers but it was too late to prevent defeat.

The last game featured two sides that were here last season. Renegades took the lead through William Halvykke who has turned into a fine player since being signed all those seasons ago. Vidal Abella equalised however before Eremia Gligor was sent off. However, that had no influence on the scoreline and the game finished 1-1.

ROUND 2

Jesus and his Pandas 0-0 Stiinta Bacau
Grand Rapids FC 1-0 The Rod Squad (Peplow ’34)
Guerrilla Renegades 1-0 Dave FC (Annekov ’62)
RAK 0-2 Steppenwolf Suckers (Nascimento OG ’25, Eriksen ’71)

After their opening day draw against Dave FC, Grand Rapids were looking to get back on track with a home game against The Rod Squad. And thanks to a goal from Graham Peplow, that’s exactly what happened. 1-0 GR and it proved to be the only goal of the game.

Unfortunately, the game between 4 time Ultimate League champions Jesus and his Pandas and current champions Stiinta Bacau proved to be a dull affair, with absolutely no goals to report. While Dave FC, who’d don well to hold Grand Rapids to a draw, lost 1-0 to Guerrilla Renegades, Maksim Annekov scoring the only goal. The other game was between two newly promoted sides and it was Steppenwolf Suckers who won this tie on RAK’s own patch.  An own goal by Guilherme Nascimento was followed by Christian Eriksen getting his second goal of the season, he appears to be the Suckers’ best goal outlet this season. Of course, these set of results means it is already impossible for any team to make a perfect start, no one had 6 points at this stage of the season, although it was last season’s top three, Grand Rapids, Guerrilla Renegades and Stiinta Bacau, who had collected 4 points after two games, with the Rapids top on goal difference.

ROUND 3

Steppenwolf Suckers 2-0 Jesus and his Pandas (Hollyfield ’16 ‘58)
Stiinta Bacau 3-0 Guerrilla Renegades (Hanus ’33, Strugure ’39, Graffman ‘84)
The Rod Squad 2-0 Dave FC (Acombley ’64, Mario ’89)
Grand Rapids FC 2-1 RAK (Warg ’82, Leadbeater ‘88) (Jorge ’49)

So, with three teams on even points, it was time to separate two of them as Stiinta Bacau took on Guerrilla Renegades in the first big game of the season. Stiinta comfortably beat the Renegades twice last season and they did so again on this occasion. The skilled Robert Enke was starting to show his age a bit with Edvard Hanus, Florin Strugure and Ingmar Graffman all converting past the Renegades’ goalkeeper. Now, it was over to Grand Rapids to see if they could take advantage.

But RAK proved to be much tougher opposition than expected as after Jorge Jorge gave them the lead, it looked like Grand Rapids were going to fall behind in the title race at this early stage, but two late goals from Sven Warg and Percival Leadbeater sealed all three points for the Rapids and it means that RAK were pointless after three rounds. Also struggling were Dave FC who’s opening day point was followed by two defeats, the second being away to The Rob Squad as Leslie Acombley and Custodio Mario secured Squad 3 points in what has been a mixed start to the season for them. So, of the three new top flight outfits it was the Steppenwolf Suckers who were doing best, Neno4 on his return to the top flight sealing a 2-0 home victory over Jesus and his Pandas in a dominant performance with new goalkeeper Max Dunganstown keeping a clean sheet and Lawrence Donaldson one of the most impressive new players in the UL this season.

ROUND 4

Stiinta Bacau 1-0 Steppenwolf Suckers (Edgren ’64)
Jesus and his Pandas 1-0 Grand Rapids FC (McAnespie OG ’21)
The Rod Squad 3-0 Guerrilla Renegades (Rodgerson ’16, PEN ’66, Bixby ’19)
RAK 3-1 Dave FC (Ronaldo ‘4, Schurmann ’21, Nascimento PEN ‘41) (Delvecchio ‘9)

Grand Rapids travelled away to Jesus and his Pandas with a win needed to keep pace with Stiinta Bacau and Steppenwolf Suckers who were facing each other that round, but they didn’t to themselves any favours when Harry McAnespie scored an own goal which ended up giving the Pandas all three points, and that was despite the fact that the Pandas went down to 10 men following Basim-Abdul Latif’s injury. W_A_R  summed up the situation perfectly when he said “What a crap way to lose the game.”

So the winner of the Stiinta Bacau vs. Steppenwolf Suckers game would go top of the league. Both teams are only very recent additions to the top flight of the Ultimate League and had it all to play for. Both teams played very familiar formations with Stiinta in the 4-5-1 and the Wolves in a 3-5-2. Now, Stiinta Bacau are a very solid team, but perhaps not quite as dominant as the Pandas were in their heyday, but they suffered a huge blow when Florin Strugure was injured. In a team of ageing players, 24 year old midfielder Florin Strugure was crucial to keeping the average age down. Stoicem even said last season that Strugure would be their new “uncle”. 30 year old midfielder Ed McImage replaced him and Stiinta found themselves with a team on the wrong side of 30.

That said, the Steppenwolf Suckers were pretty thin themselves in regards to average age, although less so than Stiinta with young midfielders Christian Eriksen and Constantino Mamora keeping the average age down among a range of midfielders with a wider age range. Despite the injury and ageing team though, Stiinta still scored a crucial goal as substitute Ed McImage set up Kurt-Erik Edgren to give the champions the lead. Steppenwolf Suckers were unable to find a response and with Grand Rapids’ defeat, Stiinta Bacau were now 3 points clear at the top.

Elsewhere, there were goals between two newly promoted teams, RAK and Dave FC. RAK took the lead inside 4 minutes through Sakai Ronaldo, but Caracario Delvecchio equalised from a free kick just 5 minutes later. Huub Schuurman put RAK back in front in the 21st minute before RAK were awarded a penalty which Nascimento converted. RAK dominated possession and took all three points, taking advantage of their powerful attacking players to make up for the rather dodgy keeper they currently have. While a comfortable win for The Rod Squad already means that Guerrilla Renegades might be in another relegation battle rather than the title challenge they’ve been craving.. It was The Rod Squad who found themselves in 2nd place.

ROUND 5

The Rod Squad 3-0 RAK (Acombley ’37, Rodgerson ‘84, Rooke ‘87)
Dave FC 0-2 Jesus and his Pandas (Dallmann ’10, Klincec ‘65)
Grand Rapids FC 3-0 Stiinta Bacau (Peplow ’55, Evers ’62, Carter ‘77)
Guerrilla Renegades 0-0 Steppenwolf Suckers

So then, this was it, last season’s top two went head to head and Grand Rapids have never beaten Stiinta Bacau since the two started sharing divisions back in Season 31. Could that be about to change this time round?

Stiinta lined up in a rather defensive 5-4-1 formation and decided not to risk Florin Strugure, while Grand Rapids went with a rather familiar 3-5-2 formation. Nothing really happened in the first half, but in the second half, Grand Rapids struck a crucial goal when Graham Peplow gave Grand Rapids the lead. Mike Evers doubled the lead moments later before Danny Carter sealed the victory. A great day for Grand Rapids fans and it helped ease the pain of the defeat to the Pandas, but it also gave The Rod Squad the opportunity to go top of the league. And thanks to goals from Leslie Acombley, Hardy Rodgerson and substitute Keith Rooke against an RAK side which saw substitute Nikola Vabec sent off and who look like they are going to drop in their first season in the top flight.

At least they weren’t Dave FC though, who had failed to pick up a single win going into the home game against the Pandas. That fact remained true after goals from Boris Dallmann and Stanisa Klincec secured the Pandas a 2-0 victory. The Pandas may be on the rebuild but they don’t look ready to go down just yet.

And so the game between Guerrilla Renegades and Steppenwolf Suckers was looking like a 6 pointer, as the loser would find themselves in the relegation zone… unfortunately this game ended in a 0-0 draw, a situation which suits the Suckers slightly more as the Renegades remained in the relegation zone, but it moves Jesus and his Pandas up into 4th place… only 4 points behind leaders The Rod Squad!

ROUND 6

Jesus and his Pandas 1-2 The Rod Squad (Klincec’89) (Acombley ’33, Bixby ’76)
Steppenwolf Suckers 1-1 Grand Rapids FC (Nehru ‘5) (Warg ’62)
Guerrilla Renegades 4-2 RAK (Melaugh ’35, ’42, Covarrubias ’85, Rackner ‘92) (Lidqvist ‘1 ‘8)
Dave FC 1-0 Stiinta Bacau (Farias ’54)

New league leaders The Rod Squad travelled to Jesus and his Pandas who despite being in the midst of a rebuild, look more likely to be challenging for the title than fighting a relegation battle. Both Grand Rapids and Stiinta Bacau needed the Pandas to do them a favour. The Pandas made things difficult for Squad, but Leslie Acombley, who else, gave them the lead in the 33rd minute. Dick Bixby later doubled that lead although a Stanisa Klincec free kick reduced the deposit.

Grand Rapids and Stiinta Bacau now had to win to keep pace and bottom of the table Dave FC played host to Stiinta. Sadly Dave FC’s team has hit the dreaded 30 mark for average age at the time when they didn’t need it, their first season in the top flight. That said, Stiinta’ team was hardly young either, but they still had the manager and the team to dominate the game, or at least the first half, but a string of impressive saves by keeper Aco Vasic kept Dave in the game and took a shock lead through Orlando Farias in the 54th minute. It was their only chance of the game while Stiinta Bacau had 6 so Stoicem has every reason to feel aggrieved.

So, dropped points for Stiinta, what about Grand Rapids? Well, the Steppenwolf Suckers proved to be a tricky task, with Subhro Nehru giving them the lead inside 5 minutes. Sven Warg equalised for Grand Rapids but then went off injured. With Jeffrey Carey having been sold off, the onus was on 22 year old midfielder Alfredo Elias to step up to the plate. However, it was yet another own goal that sunk W_A_R’s team as Mike Evers turned into his own net to give the Suckers all three points, moving level with Grand Rapids in the league. Disaster, but perfect for the Rod Squad as they stretched their lead at the top of the table to 5 points, pulling away from the pack a bit. After seasons of domination by teams around the same ages, could we be about to see a conveyor belt team win the Ultimate League?

The final game saw two teams mired in a relegation battle face each other as Guerrilla Renegades took on RAK, who took the lead early on through two Gorgen Lidqvist free kicks. But Guerrilla Renegades had a free kick maestro of their own in Raymond Melaugh and he pulled one back for the Renegades. With both teams very similar, sporting a wide range of ages and top attacking talents but also being incredibly weak at keeper (The Renegades still have Robert Enke, but at 34 years old age, he has been deemed too old by CRaPoLoGy who has instead put Sid Farrelly as the first choice) this game was always likely to be a goalfest. Melaugh got a second from the free kick spot and in a rather unique situation, we’d had four goals scored from free kicks in the first half. In the second half, Mario Andre was injured and was replaced by 20 year old Ziyad Asmat. It was the Renegades who looked sharper though and began to assault the RAK goal. They couldn’t find the back of the net though until Marcos Covarrubias struck what could be a vital 3 points for them… and then Inon Rackner made it 4-2 to seal the win without any doubt. Unfortunately for the Renegades, Steppenwolf Suckers’ victory over Grand Rapids was really not what they needed, but at least they were now level on points with the Pandas.

ROUND 7

Grand Rapids FC 3-0 Guerrilla Renegades (Peplow ‘5 ’31, Grisales ’33)
Steppenwolf Suckers 4-0 Dave FC (Marmora ’16, Sireacu ’25, Hollyfield ’48, Atkonius ‘73)
Stiinta Bacau 0-3 The Rod Squad (Neville ’33, ’83 McManaman ‘93)
RAK 4-0 Jesus and his Pandas (Hedenmalm ’12, Jorge ’81 ’86, Nascimento PEN ‘91)

Arguably the big game of the day saw early pacesetters The Rod Squad took on league champions Stiinta Bacau at the Santiago Bernebau. Squad of course led the league in the early stages but Stiinta Bacau took over from them and went on to win the league. The Rod Squad made an electric start to the game and eventually took the lead through Timmy Neville. The side in blue were completely dominant, although this led to a  much tighter second half and a chance for Stiinta. But 24 year old striker Timmy Neville soon got his 2nd, before substitute defender Terrence McManaman sealed all three points in the 93rd minute. What’s more, the two goalscorers were 24 and 22 years of age, this is a tremendous effort by Squad who have one of the weakest teams in the top flight.

Stiinta’s defeat allowed Steppenwolf Suckers to move outright into the top three in the league. Against a relegation threatened Dave FC side at the Black Pitt it proved to be too easy. Marmora, Sireacu, Hollyfield and substitute Atkonius sealed a solid 4-0 win. Now how would Grand Rapids respond?

Well, they thrashed Guerrilla Renegades, who were 6th going into this game, with Graham Peplow really coming into his own now, seemingly the natural successor to ageing free kick taker Percival Leadbeater, along with Pedro Grisales getting on the scoresheet. Despite the 3-0 win though it wasn’t enough, Steppenwolf Suckers had overtaken them into 2nd place and the top two of the Ultimate League was looking very different to past seasons. It really was a new era.

If RAK had got promoted to the top flight when the Pandas were in their prime, then they would probably be fearing for their life. As it is however, the Pandas were now a perfectly beatable opponent, albeit a somewhat tricky one. And RAK did that, winning 4-0 with goals from Mattis Hedenmalm, two from Jorge Jorge and a Nascimento penalty. RAK were bottom of the table before this match so the result was completely unexpected.

This is how things look going into halfway:

So, as we hit the halfway point and the Steppenwolf Suckers are really getting into the thick of things on their league debut. They have easily been the most impressive new outfit in the top flight. Anyone would think the manager had managed in the top flight before… oh wait, he has. Neno4 in fact won the Ultimate League way back in Season 4 with a different team and ensured the following squad will be considered Ultimate League legends

GK Danut Muntean
GK Serban Cotiugã
DF Georghes Albulescu
DF Ionut Strula
DF Roi Culebras
DF Cucu Ichim
DF Dorinel Usurelu

(Squad taken from research of matches at the time and "Players Out" page, may not be accurate)

Now, back in the top flight a whole 29 seasons later, it is quite some return and we caught up with Neno4 to discuss his season so far.

XD: So, it is now 29 seasons since you won the Ultimate League with FC Kumonovo. How does it feel to be back up here?

Neno4: It feels amazing and I feel so old now. It's been almost a decade since I won the Ultimate League and I definitely didn't think back then that I'll be back here after 8 years. Many have been saying the title I won back then was a fluke, so I decided to return to the Ultimate League, start with a new team from scratch and do it again.

XD: You’re one of the few managers who have experience of an official league’s top flight in both its early days and the modern standard. Explain to readers just how different it was back when you won the UL title to the modern top flight.

Neno4: Well while some things are very different, others are still the same. One thing that hasn't changed, but is more pronounced now is the dominance of the five man midfield. Back then there were no guides and help and we were all learning by trial and error, so not many new the winning formula of 5 strong midfielders. I was one of the first to try it and succeed with it, although the rest of the squad was below average for the top flight. One new rule that wasn't here back then is the performance penalty for a very old squad. As a fan of the conveyor belt system I hated the system of buying old guys and winning a title. It was one of the main reasons I left the game for few years and I enjoy this new system. Back to the formations X11 has always been about midfield and possession dominant team winning most of the time and while many hate this I feel even in real life most of the top teams are playing the 5 man midfield and X11 did it before the real teams started so it's always been quite a realistic game. And one more thing is I like the game stayed simple and true to its roots of easy to play, but hard to master.

XD: Steppenwolf Suckers have been bright performers in the Ultimate League so far, beating former UL champions Jesus and his Pandas and after 6 games have lost just 1 game. Has the start you’ve made surprised you?

Neno4: Well in all these years of playing X11 I’ve come used to having the outsider squad surprising the stronger opponents, so it hasn't really surprised me. The plan was and still is to just stay up this season while the new players gel with the rest of the squad and attack the title in the next 2-3 seasons.

XD: Who was your favourite player for Kumonovo?

Neno4: Oh so many to choose from. I loved that team. 2 obvious candidates are the 2 leaders, Cucu Ichim, the big leader in defence and Bogdan Nicu, the most skilled midfielder who was always man marked and sacrificed himself while all the other midfielders were scoring left and right and I gotta go with one of those. My favourite player was Andrei Frumos, who wasn't the highest skilled player, but was scoring all the time and scored many important goals in key moments.

XD: And your favourite player for the Suckers?

Neno4: For the Suckers I gotta go with the most obvious choice Lawrence Donaldson. He came to the club as a lowly 17/4 player and will be a 18 skilled player next season and probably win the MVP award this season.

XD: Can Steppenwolf Suckers eventually win the league? The stats show you are the richest team in the Ultimate League top flight so there’s clearly plenty of funds to strengthen the side.

Neno4: Well for this season I've done something I rarely do, buy old, high skilled players in order to compete which is against the way I play as I wanted to buy few teenagers to start preparing for the future, but the market for those was horrible and I was forced to buy some old guys to compete with the top teams. Anyway the answer is yes. The plan is definitely to try and win the league, but not at any cost. I'd rather stay in the Ultimate League 10 seasons, than win it once more and go straight down. So I'm trying to find the right balance and attack the title while looking at the future too.

XD: Finally, which of your two clubs do you like better, Kumonovo or the Suckers?

Neno4: Oh very hard question. Back then I was more excited about the game and everything that was happening and spent much more time online studying opponents and preparing tactics, but this mission with starting from scratch with the Suckers and overcoming all odds on the way to the Top Division is amazing and it's more relaxing and more enjoyable playing the game now, so I gotta go with the Suckers.

XD: Thank you for the interview.

….

Well, that was a very interesting interview from Neno4, is he implying that the game has been midfield centric all along?

Cup news:

Round 1:

Well, not much could be said here, this was the most predictable round of the whole tournament. Partly because the highest seeds in this round were Division 5 sides playing against brand new Division 7 sides. Division 5:20 side Terressa won 6-0 away to YEDIKULE FC and there were other 6-0s in the process. Of note is the fact that two former UL champs were among the highest seeds in this round and one of them had won the title 9 seasons ago, the other had won it over 20 seasons ago. The first was Season 24 champions Cricket Utd who now have an entirely new youthful outlook about them and crushed CARACATALCA 11-0 on aggregate. The new generation of Cricket Utd starlets are worth a whopping 181 million econ, even more impressive when you consider that the club only had 13 players at the time of the match. They have the potential to be even better than the squad that won the league title in Season 24. The other former champions who took part in the first round were Desperation Angels, who under their former identity of Ajax Treesdown won the league title with a conveyor belt like club. That team is long gone now though but they are a strong team all around that you would expect to find in Division 5.

Round 2:

Enter everyone else into the equation, and for the first time in a while we had new number 1 seeds, Lusitanian Warriors of Division 1b. Most of the top seeds were involved in very one sided affairs in the first leg, with the higher seeded team always winning. However, Division 6 side Bluebird Rovers gave Division 3 side Jackie Stamps FC a run for their money in a game which finished 5-3 to the Stamps.

You have to go down to 77th seed to find the biggest upset, as Division 6 side City Whites FC crushed Division 3’s Makang 3-0, and then knocked them out by drawing 3-3 away.  Division 4 side North Eastern Heroes also lost, 1-0 to Division 6’s Godoy Cruz, and although they won the return leg, an away goal from Cruz’s Kristian Mula knocked the Heroes out. Another Division 4 side going out to Division 6 opposition were SM Juventus, who were trashed by Division 6 side Ravens Rangers in the first leg of their cup tie and were unable to overturn it going out. Perhaps the most spectacular comeback in the cup  however was between Division 2 side My-Tee Athletic and Division 6 side Duct Tape. The Division 6 side stunned their much fancied opposition by winning 3-1, leaving My-Tee with a mountain to climb to ensure progression. They had an away goal but this was quickly cancelled out by Leonardo Pizzi, meaning My-Tee needed to score at least 4 goals without conceding to stand a chance of going through. And amazingly they did. After Rowan Blake’s early effort, two goals from Andres Iniesta and another from Gael Kakuta saw My-Tee edge the tie by a single goal. A dramatic comeback by the Division 2 side, among a round where several Division 4 sides fell to Division 6 opposition, including The King Punks, A.s Roma, Leatherheads FC.

But while My-Tee came back, another Division 2 side failed to make it past Round 2. Puskás Akadémia 2K10 were knocked out by NWP-FC, a side which have never progressed higher than the 7th tier of the Ultimate League.

Round 3:

After their spectacular comeback, My-Tee Athletic were involved in an all Division 2 tie with Division 2c side Clem Legacy FC, who had one of the best goalkeepers in the league in Aubrey Groult. A very strong side in general, it wasn’t that long ago that Clem Legacy embarked on a long cup run. One of these two teams however would be going out, the first leg finished 0-0, My-Tee were the better team but could not get past Groult. Clem Legacy FC then proceeded to destroy My-Tee Athletic in the second leg 4-1, with Frank Oswald scoring all four goals, Chad Moran’s effort proving little more than a consolation. Both these sides were competing at the sharp end in Division 2. In another all Division 2 clash, Argentona FC lost their first leg clash against COLOSSVS INVICTVS 2-0, Michael Critchton finding life in Division 2 a huge jump up from what he was used to. A weakened COLOSSVS turned up for the second leg and ended up losing 2-1 to Argentona, but the away goal ensured it would be Pbaiona’s side making it through to the next round and Argentona going out. Division 1b side Red Bull FC, back at this level under a new name having previously made it to this level as Yoga United, lost 1-0 away to Division 2 side The Streford Enders, proving that there isn’t much between the teams towards the top of the Ultimate League. Another 1-0 defeat saw the Portuguese side lose any chance of going through to the next round and going out, much to the frustration of their manager Slbx7.

One of the biggest shocks of the first leg was top flight opposition Dave FC losing 1-0 away to Division 5 side St. Johns and Friends, although the Portuguese side are one of the most valuable sides in the league and aren’t that much weaker than Dave FC. They proved it was no fluke however by . Another Division 5 side however, Kokkens slaver, managed to beat 7th seeds Piston Broke FC by a goal to nil, although this team has some cup pedigree under its previous guises of Mission Impossible FC and Tardy Hardy, and Piston Broke overturned this in the second leg. One of the biggest wins was Sporting Da Quinta’s 7-0 away win over Archangel, a staggering result. While Division 2 side Mastodontisk Mur suffered a stunning 4-1 defeat to Division 5 side UFO Click. They managed to win the return leg, but only by a single goal, dumping them out and sending UFO Click into the fourth round. Division 1 side The Dream Team FC suffered a shock defeat to Division 6 side Matanzas SCM, being comprehensively beaten in both legs.

Grand Rapids cup troubles from last season continued into this season with a 2-2 draw away to DARK TEAM (all capitals), but DARK TEAM stood no chance at Riverside Park and subsequently lost 4-2. Elsewhere, 64th seeds Saddler City were involved in an amazing tie against FCQwerty. Both teams were Division 6 sides and both served up a treat. In the first leg, FCQwerty managed to win 5-2 in a 7 goal thriller. But the second leg saw a dramatic comeback by the Saddlers as they went 4-1 up at halftime to equal Qwerty’s goal tally overall in the tie, before scoring two more to take the win outright and progress to the next round.

Round 4:

This round threw up some very big matchups all around as some of the biggest teams in the Ultimate League were drawn against each other. Top flight side Steppenwolf Suckers drew Cockney Hammers F.C. of Division 3, but Cockney Hammers are a side that wouldn’t look out of place in the top flight of the Ultimate League and made it to the last 16 of the cup last season. Goals from Christian Eriksen and Lawrence Donaldson however ensured safe passage for the Suckers. Top flight team The Rod Squad drew Shark Utd of Division 3d, and since Shark Utd are one of the most valuable up and coming teams in the Ultimate League while The Rod Squad were leaders of the UL at the time of the draw this promised to be an exciting matchup. However, Shark Utd fielded a youth filled lineup against a mainly first choice Rod Squad side, so it wasn’t much of a surprise to see Squad progress. Still, Shark Utd have only been knocked out of the cup by top flight opposition, so it can’t be that bad. There was an all Division 2 clash between 2 team’s with previous cup pedigree in Piston Broke FC and Clem Legacy FC and after two seasons of strong cup runs for Piston Broke in which they established themselves as one of the better teams in the Ultimate League, they were undone by Clem Legacy and Frank Oswald, who’s incredible performance in the previous cup game saw him bag another goal from a free kick and set up teammate Jozef Golonka to cancel out Antso Matensanz’s only effort. However, disaster struck as he was then sent off. Division 2 side Strathmore Saints were drawn against Jesus and his Pandas and shocked the top flight side, knocking them out by a single goal, a wonder strike by Dani Zagallo. It was the big story of the 4th round for sure.

Division 1 side and 3rd seeds Myrmidonians were another casualty of the 4th round as they were knocked by Division 3d side Hamilton Academical by a single goal. Dave FC’s conqueror’s St. John’s and Friends went out to Division 3 side Red Star Deanshanger, while another Division 3 side in Jackie Stamps FC needed penalties to dispatch Saddler City, Division 4 side FC Diana-Juniorii managed to knock COLOSSVS INVICTVS out of the cup in extra time, scuppering a possible chance at silverware, but with the Portuguese side involved in a tight three way battle for promotion in their division, a much tougher test than previous divisions, it just might end up being for the best, especially since their rivals, Clem Legacy FC and JK Besiktas were still in the cup.

Division 5 side Myrgasa United knocked out Division 2 side Damocles, although Myrgasa were quarter finalists a few seasons back so we know they have it in them. Division 4 side Schmock however have never been beyond the fourth round of the cup but claimed a major scalp when they knocked out former UL champions and Division 1 side AC Samba.

So, two top flight sides were out of the cup but the other six continued on their way into Round 5. We will pick up the action from Round 5 next time.

Assault on Dark Athena 2-0 Jesus and his Pandas (Enykter ’14, Velasco ’16)

After the first leg finished 0-0, what would transpire in the second leg of this cup tie? Well, the Pandas had their change report between legs and changed the look of the squad somewhat with two new youth strikers, a new range of youth midfielders and both Samuel Gutierrez and Damiano Varriale gone. Assault found that the Pandas were now easy pickings away from home, far past their prime and so Jagient Enykter and Patricio Velasco secured a quickfire 2-0 win for Cryogenizatorul’s team. The Pandas threatened a second half comeback, but it never came, so it looks like this was the Pandas’ XCL swansong for now. Will they be back in the future? Who knows, but after only just missing out on becoming the first UL side to win the XCL, they can be proud of their efforts.

Not long after Round 7, the draw was made for the 38th edition of the XCL. And for the first time since XCL 32, the Ultimate League will be represented by two teams making their XCL debuts, Stiinta Bacau and Lusitanian Warriors. While the Pandas were no longer in the XCL, this time round the UL could spread their hopes across two teams rather than dumping their eggs into one basket. But could both teams handle their groups?

Stiinta were drawn in Group G alongside Dream League champions Basica FC, Major League cup winners PFC Belgrade and Euro League cup finalists AiBK Fc. So not a particularly hard group, but spare a thought for TiagoM and his Lusitanian Warriors side who drew one of the hardest possible groups. TiagoM will have to play Xpert League double winners Dunarea Bralia, Super League winners Tour de France AND XCL Finalists and Xpert International cup winners (and fellow Portuguese team) FC Laranjas Podres. Nevertheless, anything can happen in the XCL, we saw that last season, and good luck to both Ultimate League teams.

Transfer news:

Division 5 side Everton1878 splashed out a whopping 13 million econ to take 25 year old 13 skilled midfielder Jezdimir Duskovic to Goodison Park. The midfielder is good enough to play in the top tiers of any division so for a Division 5 side like Everton to get him is a real coup. Continuing the theme of lower division sides spending big, Division 6 side Raptilez spent over 13 million econ on 24 year old midfielder Ryan Wilson. A hefty price tag to pay but one that looks set to secure Wilson’s future at the Welcome to Hell stadium.

The highly rated COLOSSVS INVICTVS, who look like being the next big side in the Ultimate League, splashed out 15 million econ on a new long term striker, Graeme McTrigg from Euro League side Annihilating Rhythm. Previously the club had been buying old strikers and farming youths, with McTrigg they now have the front man that will be tasked with putting away chances from talents like Patric Wendell, Armand Flachez and Ross Parker

Two 17 bar defenders joined Ultimate League clubs early on in the season, the first being Red Bull RC of Division 1b’s purchase of Jean-Luc Gallois from Classic League Division 3 side FCS LEEMBEK for 11 million econ. Gallios will hope to steady the ship at the back for Red Bull in a very tough Division 1 that includes all the teams that have recently been relegated from the top flight, Lusitanian Warriors, AC Samba and Myrmidonians FC. Sticking with the theme of 17 bar defenders moving from the Classic League to the Ultimate League, Classic League champions Cloggies sold their defensive colossus Theo Konings, a two time Classic League winner who made 103 appearances in the X11 for the Classic League’s all time highest points scorer, to Division 6 side Deportivo Celisol for a paltry 4.9 million. Konings joins a very young team and Deportivo will hope he can provide a role model for their three young defenders.

During the course of the season, Steppenwolf Suckers splashed out nearly 5 million econ on veteran midfielder Kjell-Åke Nylin; a lot of money for a 34 year old but with Scott Rennie injured the club were desperate for some midfield strength. While Division 5 side Alfs Eleven paid over 12 million econ to take the martial arts master himself, Jackie Chan, to their side. It remains to be seen how useful Jackie Chan will be on the field of play but at least his experience in martial arts should frighten referees into giving decisions to favour Alfs Eleven.

Leaving the Ultimate League was Stephanos Peltekidis. The 3 times XCL winning goalkeeper joined the then top flight side Partizan Belgretna for a whopping 20 million econ, however, since then Partizan Belgretna suffered two consecutive relegations. Perhaps the presence of Peltekidis was a curse on Partizan and after buying a new younger keeper, one of the best young keepers around in Fidelio Paganini, for an eye watering 24 million econ; Partizan Belgretna sold Peltekidis to Pro League big spenders Rioderogo at a cut price 5.2 million. Peltekidis was reunited with his former KBM Whitsunday teammate Carlos Targino at new club Rioderogo until Targino’s sale.

Division 3 side Ecologicos CP sold 23 year old defender Maximo Passanha for nearly 12 million econ in the biggest midseason transfer, he joins Malmstatt City in the League of Champs.

Big manager changes:

Division 2c side Tudor Transport FC saw their manager Roxbridge leave the club after 3 seasons in charge. Roxbridge guided the club up into Division 2 but they only narrowly survived relegation, despite having one of the best players in the Ultimate League in Olafur Gudmundsson. Roxbridge was replaced by Sporting Bistrita manager Liverpoolfc4ever, who left the former top flight side to join the Division 2 team. Liverpoolfc4ever was replaced at Sporting Bistrita by a brand new manager, 19 year old Spaniard Jua_RamirezHerna, who happens to be younger than most of his new squad. The club has been rebranded as FINNESSESBER FC as a result.

Meanwhile in Division 1, one of the longest serving managers in the Ultimate League was sacked by his club. Pepiluistoro, manager of Calandracas CF since season 4, having built them up to be an established Division 2 side with a season in division 1 followed by a long rebuild to make them one of the most powerful teams in the Ultimate League, saw his tenure end in Season 33 after the club’s poor start to the new season. The club replaced the Spaniard with a manager from neighbouring nation Portugal, LeaoBravo

Also in Division 1, but in the 1a variety this time round, Swedish manager Latinokille resigned from his bottom of the table side The Dream Team FC. Alas, this team has not turned out to be the intended Dream Team and due to inactivity the manager was relieved of his duties. At the time of writing a replacement has not yet been found.

But they were all trumped by mechester united, an average Division 7 club who were founded back in Season 30, who made the shock appointment of Leftblank as manager. One of the most well known managers of Xpert Eleven, Leftblank was the former manager of Amsterdam Brutez (now F.C Pau) and guided them all the way up to Division 1 while maintaining a sustainable conveyor belt system. Leftblank is also notable for his user guide which has become the most commonly used guide for new players and his witty press releases which saw his old team. However, within a week he has resigned, citing a deleted Press Release as the reason.

This has been all the Ultimate League action from the first part of the season. Feel free to comment below, do you think Neno4 may have a point on the game always being midfield centric or do you disagree?
