Pandas crown Ultimate Achievement |
After Jesus and his Pandas strolled to the Ultimate League double with consummate ease last season, Season 29 of the Ultimate League was widely expected to be a continuation of the dominance shown by the Pandas the previous season, in fact the Pandas actually got stronger as youth midfielder Saul Vellisca was sold for 11 million and the money was used to buy Boris Dallmann from Major League side Bohemians. With a midfield lineup that any team would love to have it was expected the Pandas just had to turn up to win, although several teams signed new players in an attempt to bridge the gap. In the end, the era of the Pandas dominance continued… but only just.
Season 26 champions AC Samba covered for the retirement of two defenders by signing Predrag Spasic from Suburbia Giants, Cesaro Hyperforce legends Jorge Ponzio and Dorin Goian retired and were replaced with Henjo Kaljiste and Emanuel Rodas respectively and even newly promoted Sporting Bistrita got in on the fact as they sold two veteran players and signed title winning experience in the form of former Spurs Kickers midfielder Calvin McBrain. Whether this would be enough to challenge the Pandas was unknown but it was set to be far closer than last season with two teams in particular taking the fight to the Pandas.
TiagoM’s Lusitanian Warriors had enjoyed one of the fastest rises to fame of any side in Ultimate League history. They were in Division 7 as recently as Season 22 when the current manager took over but after that the team knew nothing but winning as they won the division title every single season to gain promotion to the top flight and even lost a cup final along the way. No one gave them any chance of being able to challenge the Pandas, however for the first few weeks of the season they just continued where they left off. They were even leading the division outright after the Pandas suffered a shock defeat to their cup final opponents from last season, SL Benfica, ending an incredible unbeaten run in the league that goes back to season 27 in Division 1a and a victory against SkaunesFF. Before this defeat, the Pandas had last lost a league game against FC Boring. Meaning they’d gone an incredible 19 league games without defeat. The Pandas also suffered injuries in defence leaving them with just three active defenders at one point.
However, the tables were to turn pretty quickly. Lusitanian Warriors lost their spark after drawing 1-1 at rps78 field although to hold Grand Rapids to a draw at their own stadium is an admirable achievement. But then they drew to fellow Portuguese side Sporting Bistrita in an entertaining 3-3 before finally succumbing to defeat against a revived AC Samba, whose good form towards the end of last season continued into this one. Despite losing on the opening day to the Pandas, they won all their games since to take advantage of TiagoM’s side having a bad patch of form and overtake them in the league. Meanwhile, despite the injuries in defence, the Pandas got their mojo back and went on to win 6-0 against Grand Rapids, a performance that confirmed that the Pandas were the Ultimate League’s strongest team and best hope at winning the Xpert Champions League since F.C Sloga.
This was followed by beating Lusitanian Warriors, who at that point were seemingly out of the running after a series of poor results, at their own stadium (a performance which won Jesus MOTW) and for all intents and purposes The Warriors’ title challenge was over. Nobody was going to be able to beat the Pandas at their own stadium right? Incredibly, the half time score at 26 Bank Street was 2-0 to Lusitanian Warriors. With the Champions League starting the same week, were the Pandas suffering from having to prepare for two extra games that week? The team started to look a lot better in the second half but they just simply couldn’t convert and suffered a 2-0 defeat to the early pace setters. AC Samba took full advantage by thrashing Sporting Bistrita to go top of the league.
As if that wasn’t enough, in a midweek Champions League game the Pandas’ injury woes continued as they lost influencial midfielder Damiano Varriale. Not the best of times to get an injury especially away to Grand Rapids the following Monday. The game at rps78 field then was crucial if the Pandas were to keep pace with the new league leaders AC Samba. The game was going badly for the Pandas, Dwight Revell’s goal was compounded by a slight injury to the Panda’s only keeper Freddie Alnerud, but two quickfire goals snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. It appeared the win had come with good timing too, but a dramatic last minute winner in the Samba-Lusitanian Warriors game by Ebenezer Sampaio of all people sealed the win for Samba and kept them three points ahead of the Pandas. As long as the Pandas stayed within three points of Samba at the top though, they had a chance.

AC Samba were away to Cesaro Hyperforce while Jesus and his Pandas had SL Benfica at home, the team that had ended their win streak back in round 3. Hyperforce hadn’t had a great season but they still had a chance of escaping relegation with Jesus1983 wishing Hyperforce boss Trozio good luck in his game against Samba. Samba made a good start when Losaldo gave them the lead but Baxter Sleath equalised. Soba Nepe then gave Hyperforce a shock lead and AC Samba suffered a nasty injury to Heimo Ajalin. Could Samba turn it round? Samba dominated the second half but Kaljiste was imperious and only in the 85th minute did Samba finally breach him and get an equaliser. Still, two points dropped for Samba was fantastic news for the Pandas provided they beat Benfica. But Benfica were the first team to beat the Pandas this season so a win was far from assured. Benfica’s Champions League form surfaced here however and the Pandas ran out 4-0 winners to move to within a point of Samba.
Following wins for Grand Rapids and Lusitanian Warriors, the table now looked like this.

Jesus and his Pandas had a tough game against Sporting Bistrita while AC Samba were away to Benfica. The Pandas knew that they could not afford to lose this match, defeat to Bistrita and a win for Samba would secure them the title. Meanwhile, at the bottom, Cesaro Hyperforce would have to hope both Samba and the Pandas won their games while attempting to beat Lusitanian Warriors to preserve their 14 season run in the top flight. Grand Rapids weren’t safe either at this stage.
Knowing they were up against it, Sporting Bistrita proved a tough nut for the Pandas to crack. It took until the 54th minute for a Stanisa Klincec free kick to finally break the deadlock. Howard Boothroyd then showed why he is one of the most feared strikers in the Ultimate League as his shot from outside the box stranded Bistrita keeper Folmann, ensuring that the title race would be down to the last day of the season. The question was though, who would have the initiative?
At the Estadio de Luz, an Enrico Paris masterclass set AC Samba on their way to a 4-0 victory. Paris scored a free kick, chipped Guilfre Nano twice and set up young Melvin Hartnell in a masterclass display reminiscent of his performance against Cormorans back in season 26, when AC Samba won the title. History could repeat itself then as AC Samba led the Pandas by a single point.
Defeats for both Sporting Bistrita and SL Benfica allowed Cesaro Hyperforce the chance to attempt to escape from relegation against a Lusitanian Warriors side with nothing to play for. In the 84th minute, Soba Nepe powered home a header past Daniel Alvin to make it 1-0 Hyperforce and the away fans celebrated what could prove to be the most crucial goal in their entire season in the battle against relegation. This goal also confirmed that Falkirk Flyers would be relegated to Division 1 after just one season in the top flight, although they could go down having said they didn’t lose to Grand Rapids after a 1-1 draw. Sporting Bistrita were all but relegated. The only way they could avoid relegation was if they won their last game and had a better goal difference than Cesaro Hyperforce, who were playing Grand Rapids, while also hoping Lusitanian Warriors beat SL Benfica.
But now, this meant that going into the final game, here is how things stood:

So, AC Samba, 1 point ahead of reigning champions Jesus and his Pandas. In an amazing coincidence the two title chasing teams played each other on the final day of the season. This would be the biggest match in Ultimate League history since Cesaro Hyperforce vs. Atletico Wolves back in season 18 on the final day of that season. Samba could afford a draw against the Pandas; the Pandas had to win to retain the title. AC Samba have never beaten Jesus and his Pandas in a top flight fixture but it was their home stadium, the Sambarello that was to be the stadium in which the title was decided. Before the match, the Xpert Daily attempted to catch up with both managers to ask how they were feeling before the match began. Unfortunately Tom was unavailable for comment but we did manage to get hold of Jesus before the match.
XD: Not long now until kickoff, how are you feeling about the big match ahead?
Jesus1983: I am not very confident at all. I have been playing 3 games a week for a while now and just off the back of a cup final win where my 16 bar defender was injured. Tom has had time to prepare fully for the game and I think home advantage will be crucial. I also think he deserves to win the title.
The League Decider
And so to the team news. AC Samba had a fully fit squad to choose from, so were expected to line up in the 4-5-1 formation that has served them so well this season. The Pandas had a slight broader range of formations but had key defender Rico Bornes injured so they lined up in a 3-5-2 formation with 26 year old Yukihiko Yamase in the backline, the Pandas chancing an average age drop to allow them to compete with Samba
The referee for the biggest league match in ages in the Ultimate League was Travis Tee. He got the game underway and the whole of the UL was watching. In the first 10 minutes, the Pandas won a free kick. Stanisa Klincec stepped up to take the free kick and curled the ball into the top of the net past the Samba defenders, beating Charles Salgueira. 1-0 to the Pandas, it was first blood to Jesus’ team. Would Samba respond or would this turn into a one sided affair? How about this for a twist? Pandas goalscorer Stanisa Klincec, the only free kick taker in the Pandas’ lineup got an nasty injury to continue the trend that the Pandas have had all season, so Maart Vane replaced him. With the Pandas’ free kick specialist removed from the game, Samba felt they had a chance, but they too suffered a nasty injury, this time to 24 year old star Marcelo Losaldo. So, this meant, despite the fact that he started on the bench, AC Samba captain Mikael Friberg would come on and retake his captain’s armband for the last time. This was his final appearance for AC Samba and it was in the biggest game of them all. 19 minutes in, Howard Boothroyd had the chance to double the Pandas’ lead but smashed into the crossbar. A Samba equaliser would make this game interesting but no-one could have seen how it would have unfolded. Boris Dallmann, the newest edition to the Pandas’ squad as of this season, suffered the agony of deflecting his shot on Alnerud’s goal. The former Bohemians midfielder’s deflection was too good even for his illustrious teammate and it was 1-1. In a game the Pandas needed to win to secure the title, the very thought that one of their own players could cost them the title didn’t bear thinking about… 1-1 at half time and as things stood, AC Samba would be champions.
Second half began and in the 51st minute Heimo Ajalin broke on the counter attack but his shot hit the crossbar. Agonisingly close to giving Samba the lead, even if a draw was all they needed. The Pandas continued to press and Jakub Feliszek tried a long range shot but to no avail as he was wide of Salguiera’s goal. 5 minutes later however, and the title was heading back in the Pandas’ favour, Octavia Szilard played in Feliszek and his lobbed shot beat Salgueira and it was now 2-1. Pandas were on course for the double. 70 minutes in and staring down the possibility of losing the lead of the league they’d held for so long, AC Samba brought young Rene Tedesco on in place of Edwin Denton, an interesting call by Tom. Samba seemed to be out of luck in this second half after Love Ankarberg picked up a knock, meaning he’d have to play the rest of the game below par. Time ticked on and it looked like the Pandas had done enough unless there was to be a dramatic last minute equaliser. The Pandas won another free kick in the 88th minute but with no Klincec or Bornes, Abella was not able to trouble Salgueira. There was to be no dramatic injury time winner for AC Samba though and in the cruellest way possible, they’d conceded their lead to the Pandas at exactly the wrong time. There was a pitch invasion at the end of the game as the Pandas celebrated a second league title in succession. Only four other clubs have managed to win two titles in succession and the Pandas have ensured that they’ll forever be remembered as one of the Ultimate League’s greatest teams.
Spare a thought for Tom and his AC Samba side however. Against all the odds, they’d been imperious all season and seen off opponent after opponent. The only team they hadn’t managed to beat was the Pandas and unfortunately that cost them the chance of a second title. Despite boasting a squad inferior to some of their rivals, not just the Pandas, they’d killed off opponents with a brutal efficiency and this will feel like a lost opportunity. If Tom plays it right though they could have another title in the near future, but they have some tough opposition for next season.
The title battle wasn’t the only thing to be decided on the last day, there was still the matter of a relegation spot to be decided. In an incredible twist, Cesaro Hyperforce boss Trozio failed to turn up for his side’s final league game of the season and as a result lost 3-0 to Grand Rapids. SL Benfica knew therefore that they could stay up if they won against Lusitanian Warriors but participation in the Xpert Champions League has completely destroyed Benfica’s form and confidence and they fell to a 4-0 defeat, meaning that after a two season stay in the top flight Benfica were relegated and Cesaro Hyperforce would be playing an incredible 15th season in the top flight of the Ultimate League. The game between Falkirk Flyers and Sporting Bistrita was effectively dead rubber with both sides relegated but Falkirk went out on a high and ensured they didn’t finish bottom of the table by beating Sporting Bistrita 2-1. This meant they were only four points from safety after all.

Well, if you thought this season was fantastic you’re in for a treat next season. If you’ve been following the XCL in recent seasons you might remember a team called Partizan Belgretna who won a group containing Delta Q and Stiinta U Craovia. Well, the Season 27 Ultimate League cup winners, managed by Rayfulton, will be making their top flight debut next season after winning Division 1 at the first attempt. Joining them is another face familiar to worldwide audiences, former XCL semi-finalist CRaPoLoGy with a former top flight team in Trotters IT Peckham. Trotters finished 2nd in season 20 and 10 seasons later will be hoping to go one better. The final team to be promoted is another former top flight team, and not just any former top flight team, two time champions Damocles will be back in the big time after a thrilling penalty shoot-out victory over Berlin Kapitals. The teams in the UL top flight next season will hold 7 league titles and 7 cup titles between them. Talk about strength in depth....
Season stats:

Following the big game, we managed to catch up with both managers and had discussions with both of them on the season and that last game. Jesus’ interview will be published later on in the article, but for now, we sat down with Tomj for an interview.
XD: That was a disappointing end to your season. Your team were so impressive throughout the season so it must hurt to lose it at the last moment?
Tomj: Yep, to have 34 points and not win the title is a real sickener. Jesus and his Pandas are one of the best teams anywhere and to beat them to a second title would have been a real feather in our cap. But I didn't do a good job of the tactics and now and what was looking a legendary campaign is barely in the record books.
XD: Do you think AC Samba can still win a second title in the future?
Tomj: Not without a rebuild, we're expecting a decent change report but I'm big on average age and our defence is looking old. It will be difficult to remedy this though I have some ideas. A double-jumping youth would be useful. We'll give it a go though; it certainly won't need as many points as it did this season!
XD: What do you make of the recent decision to get rid of overtraining?
Tomj: Suits me down to the ground. I spare no expense when it comes to training.
XD: Which teams in the lower divisions do you think have the potential to be future giants?
Tomj: Whichever ones get in good young players and train them into good grown men. That takes a little savvy and lot of staying power, I never thought I'd get anywhere near the top and dread to think how many hours it took!
As for names, take a look at the highest squad values and there are plenty of lower-league clubs with good young squads. Under Construction strike me as future champions, they have a good manager and could arrive in a big way in 18 months or so.
XD: Why did you decide on the name AC Samba for your team?
Tomj: I unimaginatively just adopted the name of a 5-a-side team I was playing for? There's another famous samba team on Xpert isn't there?
XD: Finally, as an Oldham fan, it’s been a promising start to your season, do you think Lee Johnson can transform your side into promotion contenders or do you think it’ll be another season of mid-table?
Tomj: 16 years in league 1, on the back of 20 in the two above, I'm one of the hardy few-thousand who still turn out to watch them. Often on my own - most of my mates are mere reds - I turn up, hand over £20 and watch a dour defeat, I'd be as well sitting at home in the fridge.
It's a good club though, we've had some great times and people are excited about Johnson. He's signed some very promising players, and we have Jose Baxter who's more talented than most Premier League, or certainly better to watch anyway. Up there with Sean Gregan in the entertainment stakes.
Cup
The early rounds of the cup saw a few surprises, no less than when AC Samba lost 3-0 to Division 5 side Alberoma FC whose manager had only been in the job for less than a month, although Samba overturned this deposit in the second leg. Falkirk Flyers also went out of the cup in round 3 to Division 6 side FC Primavara which compounded a very average top flight debut season. The major casualties continued as cup finalists from last season SL Benfica were dumped out on penalties by Division 4 side Calcadracas CF; Berin Kapitals (semi-finalists from last season) conceded two goals in extra time to Division 4 side Double Team in the 5th round. There was also a bit of controversy after the cup was entirely redrawn for round 3 after the Ultimate League FA decided it would be a great idea put holders Jesus and his Pandas against the same side they beat in Round 2, with many managers unhappy about their opposition being changed. Nevertheless, as the cup progressed, the field was narrowed down to just 16 teams, with some familiar faces and some not so. The draw for the round of the last 16 was made as follows:
Hapoel Arad FC vs. Jesus and his Pandas
FC Empire vs. Stiinta Bacau
D.T.S 1972 vs. Trotters IT Peckham
Piston Broke FC vs. Bestro
AC Samba vs. Grand Rapids FC
Mission Impossible FC vs. Compass Rose
Francis Combe United vs. Damocles
Partizan Belgretna vs. F.C RAPID
The stand out tie of the round was easily AC Samba vs. Grand Rapids. Three top flight teams were left in the draw and a further four former top flight teams were in the running. To add to this, four of the teams left in the competition had won the league title before and there were four former cup winners left in the field so there was clearly quality left. The game between Grand Rapids and Samba saw Grand Rapids race into an early 3-0 lead inside 18 minutes, Arber, Grisales and Revell all scoring while the soon to be retired Stewart McFerran added two more in the second half to end AC Samba’s chances of doing the double, but judging by the lineup Samba put up they didn’t think they could win the double and decided to play young Lionel Rodriguez up front. Either way it was a completely dominant performance from Grand Rapids, who joined Jesus and his Pandas, Damocles, Trotters IT Peckham, Stiinta Bacau, Bestro, F.C Rapid and the story of the season, Division 5 side Compass Rose, who survived all manner of trials and tribulations to book their place in the last 8 of the cup.
From there, the quarter finals threw up a tasty fixture between the Pandas and Grand Rapids while also throwing the top two in Division 1b together, while cup hotshots Compass Rose had a tough game against an F.C RAPID side that boasts former Champions League winning experience in goalkeeper Pascal Berretta and striker Rico Solez, both ex-Samba Juniors. Jesus and his Pandas beat Grand Rapids 2-0 although they had a bit of fortune in the biggest threat to Freddie Alnerud, Grand Rapids striker Ralph Arber, suffered a nasty injury early on in the cup tie and Pedro Grisales was sent off in the second half. Elsewhere, the game between Damocles and Trotters IT Peckham was incredibly dramatic. Damocles lost their best striker Octavio Taviera to injury as well as one of their best defenders Yoshimiro but it took until the 94th minute for a goal to be scored. Ireneusz Zulinski thought he’d won the game for the Trotters with the very last kick of the game but controversially referee Robert Nixon had ruled it out for offside and the game went to extra time and then penalties. After both Jarsteinen and van Cortlandt missed penalties, the decisive miss came from Mario Andre, ending CRaPoLoGy’s cup dreams and ambitions of returning to the Champions League while putting Damocles into the semi-finals. After the match, CRaPoLoGy was fuming at losing the tie despite having the better tactics.
Meanwhile, Compass Rose’s exploits in the Ultimate League cup tragically ended to F.C Rapid as Berretta proved impenetrable, but they can hold their heads high after such a superb run. The other quarter final saw up and coming team Bestro knocked out of the cup by another up and coming team in Division 3 side Stiinta Bacau who made club history as they made it to the semi-finals for the very first time. Their reward? A semi final clash against Jesus and his Pandas. This meant if the Pandas got through to the final they would be facing either Damocles or F.C RAPID in the final. This meant that in some form or another, the opposition would have title winning experience should the Pandas get through, but of course, they weren’t through yet. And it appeared to be dangerous to write Stiinta Bacau off as they took a shock lead through Padurairu and Edgren. Howard Boothroyd pulled one back for the Pandas and Boris Dallmann made it 2-2. A penalty shootout was needed to decide who would make it to the final. It was a close shootout but Stiinta scorer Kurt-Erik Edgren, after being a hero in the first half, became the villain that cost his club a place in the Ultimate League Cup Final. Pandas were on course for the double at this stage and with their XCL elimination confirmed at this point, could pour all their efforts into the last two matches of the season.
In the other semi-final, season 23 and 25 champions Damocles faced a team from Division 4 that had never won the title but were very strong nevertheless in F.C RAPID. 20 year old Samalias Nansson thought he’d given F.C RAPID a priceless lead, only to see his goal chalked off for offside. In the 61st minute, Loki Ladd, Damocles’ record signing, got on the end of Aron van Cortlandt’s through ball and beat RAPID’s illustrious keeper to make it 1-0. Roobaert thought he’d added to the lead, but his goal was disallowed like Nansson’s. Nevertheless, Damocles were through to the Ultimate League cup final for the first time.
The Final
And so, to the cup final. 23rd August 2013 was the date and the match was Jesus and his Pandas vs. Damocles. Jesus and his Pandas and Damocles have met each other in the league before, back in season 18 Damocles were on their way up while a youthful Pandas team, then known as Monty Payton, were on their way down containing 9 of the players that would go on to dominate the Ultimate League. More importantly however, it was a clash between two former Ultimate League champions with Thunderbroom and Jesus1983 having never met each other in official leagues before.
Jesus and his Pandas’ attempt to become the first team since F.C Sloga to defend the cup started with a game against Pattagal. The aforementioned redraw came about after redrawing Pattagal so they ended up against CDF Jimbofogo instead. Tifosi Ultra, Rajao FC, Calandracas CF and Not So Young Boys fell before the last 16 to the Pandas and their next three wins over Hapoel Arad FC, Grand Rapids and Stiinta Bacau are already well known.
As mentioned earlier in the article, Damocles survived all manner of trials and tribulations to get to the final. Manchesterneld City, Konhoa Dragons, Wizards F.C and Dave FC all fell before a smash and grab win against Lusitanian Warriors despite Tiago’s side having the better tactics and more of the chances. Bruchweg United then fell and the rest of the run has already been detailed so I don’t need to elaborate.
The two teams, led out by Octavian Szilard and Bert Stroeve to a packed Xpert Arena, bypassed the Golden Cup on the way out of the tunnel. Manager Jesus1983 decided to play the following team:
21 GK Freddie Alnerud
2 DF Basim Abdul-Latif
5 DF Rico Bornes
6 DF Samuel Gutierrez
7 MF Vidal Abella
8 MF Octavian Szilard
10 MF Boris Dallmann
14 MF Damiano Varriale
11 MF Stanisa Klincec
9 FW Howard Boothroyd
12 FW Jakub Feliszek
Subs:
3 DF Jurjen Stroeve
13 DF Yukihiko Yamase
4 MF Maart Vane
16 MF Mauro Gago
15 FW Marinho Monte
It’s been a while since Damocles were in the UL limelight, new teams had arisen as the major forces in the league, but here they were, contesting their first ever cup final and on course for a potential promotion back to the top flight of the Ultimate League. Thunderbroom had a few options his team could play as they took the task of trying to beat the Pandas in the only way they knew how.
29 GK Richard McDaniel
27 DF Marty Just
26 DF Loki Ladd
6 DF Yasushi Yoshimiro
16 DF Jeff Bannernan
21 MF Bert Stroeve
24 MF Aron van Cortlandt
5 MF Dirk Roobaert
25 MF Sebastian Gimenez
22 MF Costy Urdaru
10 FW Octavio Taviera
Bench:
19 GK Kevin Wattamaleo
20 DF Ugolino Amoroso
28 MF Patric van Behren
13 FW Malcolm Heaton
Jesus and his Pandas were heavy favourites going into this match but it was a position TB had been in before, in season 25 Damocles won the title after coming from 5th to 1st over the last few rounds in a season where Cricket Utd were heavy favourites for the title but chucked it away in the last match. That was then, this is now and the Pandas’ intimidating looking lineup stood between TB and a first ever cup win for the side.
Referee Charlie Fender got the game underway and it was a pretty quiet start to the game. Pandas were bossing possession but only just and weren’t able to create any chances. Then in the 9th minute, the Pandas suffered a huge blow as Rico Bornes, who was such a rock at the back for the Pandas over the season, was carried off with a nasty injury, fortunately his replacement Jurjen Stroeve wasn’t half bad. Whatever Damocles’ strategy was though, they seemed to be making it difficult for the Pandas. Damocles also suffered an injury however, though it was only a minor one. Even so, that minor injury was to star defender Loki Lad, already 17 skill at just 28 years old and a title winner twice already, this wasn’t going to help shut the Pandas out. The game seemed to be more about who could hurt each other hardest rather than who could score the most goals at this point (although with such a poor referee in charge of the cup final it’s hardly a surprise) and young Ugolino Amoroso was drafted in as his replacement. The telling injury however, was to Richard McDaniel, Damocles’ goalkeeper who was slightly injured. He was substituted for 24 year old Kevin Wattamaleo. That was two key players for Damocles injured within 5 minutes.
And another soon fell. This time it was a nasty injury to Aron van Cortlandt, who was substituted by Patric van Behren, meaning Damocles had already used up all three substitutes in 32 minutes, whereas the Pandas still had two left. The first half ended and there were no goals to speak of, in fact, neither side had a single shot on goal. It was a poor first half in all honesty and the millions of Pandas and Damocles fans that had travelled all the way to Sweden to see their team play in the Xpert Arena for the Ultimate League Cup final were extremely disappointed with what they were seeing…
Hope for a better second half right? The first chance of the game was always going to be crucial and it finally came in the 56th minute when Boothroyd was chopped down on the edge of the area by Jeff Bannernan. Fender gave a free kick to the Pandas and it was Stanisa Klincec vs. Kevin Wattamaleo to potentially give the Pandas a vital goal. And you have to say, I wouldn’t fancy Wattamaleo on the receiving end of a Klincec free kick and so it proved. Klincec, despite the wall erected in front of him by the Damocles players, spotted a tiny gap, looped the ball round the wall and into Wattamaleo’s net.
So the score now was 1-0 to the Pandas and Damocles were up against it now, they hadn’t created a single chance on goal and with the only chance of the game, the Pandas were now leading. Two minutes later however, Damocles won a free kick. However, they had no free kick specialist on the field and all the usual takers were injured. So instead, the ball was lifted up for veteran midfielder Sebastian Gimenez who striked the ball on the half volley. Unfortunately for him, he missed the goal.
63 minutes in and the traditionally attacking orientated Pandas found themselves caught on the counter attack. Gimenez played the ball into Octavio Taviera and he tried to beat Pandas goalkeeper Freddie Alnerud to his right, but the 35 year old veteran striker was wide of the target. Damocles were having all the chances since Klincec’s free kick was converted, they won another free kick in the area and this time the ball was played into Taviera. Having missed his chance on the counter attack before, Taviera’s header was so close to the target, just a little lower and it would have gone in and made it game on. The Damocles fans could sense an equaliser coming, their team were on top. Ultimately however, there were no further chances created while Damocles were on top and the Pandas got back in the game, but not without an injury to Vidal Abella. Injury time was long in this game thanks to that first half and in the 94th minute of the game, the Pandas won another free kick. Damocles had fought valiantly to get to this stage of the competition and had plenty of luck along the way but it appeared the luck had deserted them at the wrong time. Klincec’s’ free kick did miss Wattamaleo’s goal but it didn’t matter.
The full time whistle blew and Jesus and his Pandas were cup champions for the third time. The players celebrated wildly and Jesus1983 did too. After writing off his chances of winning anything, he’d claimed the Ultimate League cup for the third time, while for Damocles it was a tragic end to a spirited cup run. The game was hardly a classic, it was more injury filled than it was goal filled and there have been better finals, but at the end of the day it was another trophy to add to the Pandas’ cabinet. This would then become a double with the league title added three days later.
Possession: 53 - 47 (54-46)
Chances: 2 - 3 (0-0)
Home - Man Of The Match - Away
Samuel Gutierrez Jeff Bannerman
After the match there was a lot of controversy over Thunderbroom’s decision to substitute players like Loki Ladd and Richard McDaniel for kids. Thunderbroom later revealed a slight oversight in last minute setup checks had resulted in the goalkeeper substitution although rumours claimed he was involved in a bribe from middle-eastern betting syndicates… Despite telling everyone he had no appetite for an XCL adventure, the double for the Pandas means that’s exactly what will be happening, a return for Damocles to the XCL. Nevertheless, we at the XD wish him all the best of luck for his campaign ahead which also includes a return to the Ultimate League top flight. With Benfica setting the benchmark very low for cup finalists there is no pressure on Damocles and that should make things interesting…..
Cup stats:
Top points scorer: Edvard Hanus (Stiinta Bacau), Ailean Carney (Mission Impossible FC) - both 16
Top goalscorer: Ailean Carney (Mission Impossible FC) - 13
Top assists: Jack Osbourne (CL Istanbul 05)
MVP: Martim Scolari (Grand Rapids FC), Raymond Melaugh (Trotters IT Peckham) – both 7
We at the Xpert Daily managed to catch up with Jesus1983 following his side’s last gasp heroics in the league and cup over AC Samba and Damocles respectively, the interview was conducted after the AC Samba league game.
XD: Congratulations on becoming the first team since Cormorans to win back to back titles. Are you delighted, relieved or both at this outcome?
Jesus1983: I am delighted and surprised. I honestly believed a draw in the last match was a certainty and we would miss out. Tom was unbeaten at home until today....so it proves what a great result this was for us.
XD: This season was a lot closer than last time, AC Samba really pushed you all the way this time but do you think it would have been this close if you hadn’t picked up so many injuries over the season?
Jesus1983: I don't think injuries can be used as an excuse really. We have a better squad than last season with top players waiting for their chance. We only slipped up in 2 league games so it just goes to show what a great season Tom had.
XD: Was there any doubts about whether your team could win the title when your team lost to Benfica early on in the season?
Jesus1983: Huge doubts. That was a very poor result...definitely the worst of the season. It was a game we should have won so the belief started to dwindle.
XD: When Boris Dallmann scored the own goal in the final game of the season did you ever feel a tinge of regret signing him?
Jesus1983: Not at all. He was a great signing. Not many good managers would turn down the chance to sign a 16 bar hard trainer at that price. He also had a very good season and scored some vital goals.
XD: You’ve also managed to win the Ultimate League cup, your team is now tied with F.C Sloga as the most successful club in the Cup’s history, how does that make you feel?
Jesus1983: To win 3 cups in 4 seasons is a great achievement. You have to try to win as many trophies as possible while your team is capable as time at the top doesn't last long.
XD: It was a pretty dirty cup final, the first half was solely injuries and no chances. Do you think you would have won the game if Damocles’ McDaniel had played the full 90 minutes?
Jesus1983: I'm not sure to be honest. It was a really even game as you said so it could have gone either way. I think the reason I won the cup was because Thunder substituted his lightly injured players meaning his weaker players came on from the bench. It would have likely gone to penalties otherwise then it's a lottery.
XD: How does it feel to know your club is joining Steaua lu Manone, Rasaritul Delta, La Armonia BBa, F.C Sloga, Cormorans and Damocles as the only clubs to have won the Ultimate League multiple times?
Jesus1983: This is good. I knew the team was special when I first took over. It was always my aim to win many trophies and that is what I have done.
XD: Your team will once again be in the Xpert Champions League. Your side seems to have struggled against Major League sides in the XCL so how do you rate your chances in the next edition and is there anyone you’d want to face?
Jesus1983: I was really disappointed with my XCL run last season. I honestly thought I could better my last 8 exit a few seasons ago but it wasn't meant to be. My team is now too old to compete and I will struggle to get past the group stages again.
FreddyAdu has won the Major League this season (Read more about that here – XD) and was the man responsible for dumping me out at the quarter final stage a few seasons ago. It would be nice to meet him again.
XD: What do you make of the recent decision to get rid of overtraining?
Jesus1983: This is a great decision. Spending cash on training only to see a negative result was pretty damn annoying!
XD: Which teams in the lower divisions do you think have the potential to be future giants?
Jesus1983: I haven't really looked if I am perfectly honest. I know that 'Under Construction' managed by Wixie is an incredible side and surely future champions. I also know that Duffster is one if the all time greats and has a team currently in the lower tier.
You also have a lot of passion for the game and I don't see why you can't climb the leagues in future. ;-)
XD: Finally, as a Newcastle fan, what do you make of Loic Remy joining the club on loan given what happened regarding him in the January transfer window?
Jesus1983: I was really pissed off with Remy in January when he joined a smaller club for more money. However if he does the business on the pitch this season then he will win me over. Football fans are easily swayed by performances.
And so ends a cup competition that had it all, thrills, spills upsets, a Division 5 side making it to the quarter finals, controversy and a clash of the titans final. If there’s one thing for sure, the Ultimate League next season has a hard act to follow up this season in both league and cup competitions…
The question now on everyone’s minds will be who can stop the Pandas from winning?
