XCL XXVII Matchday 4 & 5
A difference to proceedings this week, apologies to all as my internet connection was down last week plus various personal problems occurred so I’ve slapped the reports for weeks 4 and 5 together and thanks also to RobstertheLobster for his reports on week 4’s Group G and H, we bring to you the fourth and penultimate weeks of the group stages.

Group A

Magico Parma (75.787 – Semme_88) 1-0 Fianna fishermen (62.416 – Dochawkes)

Out of nowhere the fishermen turned into giant-killers and even ousted Parma from second spot in the group on merit last week after defeating Semme’s ailing side so in this away game they got stuck-in with a defensively packed 532 – a much criticized formation at the heart of the xpert cerebellum. Parma meanwhile went with their familiar 442; well it works so well for them domestically so old habits die hard here too. The fishermen were doing impressively well to hold their own in the first period but were unsettled as the match approached the break after conceding a needless freekick; Timothy Sims made them pay with a bullet of a set play to give Parma the lead. The second half was a lot more spread out with both teams having different bites of the cherry but neither could notch, good news for Parma fan boys though as the Swedes retake a top two spot in the group, Fianna displaced for the moment.

Modest FC (55.700 – James.) 1-1 Realgalacticos (82.153 – RealGalacticos)

The Galacticos retook their place as the best place team in accordance to TTT stats this week and given they were playing one of the jokers in the pack this week; the pressure was on them to dismantle this Modest FC side, something they were unable to do last week. Both these sides were restricted to less than four subs with Modest going for a 352, brave choice against this lot. The galacticos themselves went with a 451 so a real midfield battle royale here. And boy were we in for a shock when Kevin Chapman volleyed home after a corner on sixteen minutes to hand James’ side the lead – well I never! A little alarm clock reminder for the galacticos who had momentarily pressed the ‘snooze’ button – they reacted positively and on the half hour Ger Binken restored normality with a sensational strike from a full thirty-five yards, think Fabio Rochemback but in motion, not on the spot. Despite this brief wake-up, Modest were very gallantly clinging on to their far more maligned opposition and clung on to a very precious point indeed on home turf, a real turn up for the books! Dismal galacticos and they might yet find themselves in a scrap to qualify from this group, very pleasing though for James and Modest!

Group B

Hellmoppers FC (64.837 – Gordons19) 0-2 Dream Pilots (72.498 – SuperSprint)

Dream Pilots won their first two XCL games with relative ease so last week in what was their first home game of the competition so far, decided to do something daring and lose to make this group appear on the outside like an exciting one. The Hellmoppers would certainly have to act on instinct today after such a fortuitous win if they want to make an assault on the leading pair in Group B. 352’s were the order of the day here and it was the Pilots who put this system to good use scoring after just four minutes of this tie and it was Jukka-Pekka Öörni – XCL legend status already – who struck the opener. Hellmoppers certainly seem to be mopping the trapdoor to XCL hell, they just haven’t impressed at all in this competition since matchday one which they also lost. Another titanic struggle to peg the Pilots back was ended on 57 minutes after Bjørnar Vigeland’s cool header, a goal restoring that six point cushion the Pilots held over the Hellmoppers prior to the double-headers and with only two games left now, they’re looking good to qualify while the Hellmoppers may as well focus on domestic commitments in what is proving to be a fiercely competed season in the Hattrick this time out.

FC Vasaparken (74.559 – Vilmerito) 1-3 Eagle Army FC (77.018 – Gazfraz)

Vasaparken haven’t exactly shone in the competition so far and even contributed to EAFC reaching a group landmark of the first side to actually win on their home patch. EAFC have recovered from their sluggish start to join Dream Pilots at the summit of Group B. They were also going 352 here as Vasaparken naively chose a 451. To be fair to Vasaparken, they haven’t really had the rub of the green in this competition so far and were thwarted from a break early on here too when Camilo Aires rather brutally slid in on lone frontman Malte Hill, ending the striker’s brief solo run out and earning the midfielder just a yellow card, a decision which wasn’t agreed with through many sections of the hostile crowd. The loss of the big, chirpy man up front seemed to lead to the titanic crumbling of Vasaparken in offence and defence, their aerial woes continued as first Luis Gilberto from the back got on the end of a Johannes Rydman cross and then Walton Stonie opened up his XCL scoring account with a header from a similar range. As the game wore on, Vasaparken became more and more confident in possession and with five minutes left to play, name-hogger Carl-Gustaf von Scheéle not only continued the tradition of goalscoring defenders but gave Vasaparken with a cool finish from the edge of the box, certainly not reminiscent of a typical centre halves finish. This hope was cruelly shot dead in seconds though, Stonie adding a second less than two minutes later with a close range strike before making way for youngster Tomas Beresford for the last couple of minutes. This win cements EAFC’s presence in the top two and has them well on their way to round two, Vasaparken’s stay in the XCL looks grim to say the least.

Group C

Angered Ghettostars (73.211 – MagnusGbg) 2-0 Bad Habits (53.276 – Soso_lucky)

The Ghettostars were very charitable last week, affording Bad Habits a point despite constant pressure from the first minute to the last, something told me they weren’t going to be in as forgiving a mood this week, again lining up in their customary 352 formation. Bad Habits up against it again fielded a 541 – again and this actually fared alright against their opposition, the all-out-defence system culminated in no goals for the first half and the nightmares of last week came flooding back. Things weren’t improving in the second half however finally after plenty of persistence, the Ghettostars finally broke the deadlock at the umpteenth time of asking, Finlay Tillery bounding through and smacking a screamer past Georgatos to get the game’s first goal. The same player made it two with a close range header to get AG’s stuttering XCL campaign back on track, panic stations seized at the minute for the Ghettostars who inch ever closer to progression, Bad Habits being all but out of it in their hopes of a second round berth.

Athletico Llamedos (74.188 – Cyprus) 1-0 Mirandela Gorilas (61.626 – Theacher)

Seems to have been a curse of the MOTW award because the Gorilas seem to have slipped into mediocrity after Theacher scooped the coveted gem of an award. To get back on track he eyed a draw for his side here, 541 against their opponents who went with a 451 – expect a low-scoring game. And that was what we got; the first half crept by without a whisper at either end, a boring statement for the XCL. The Llamedos did decide to spice things up in the second half and Maurice Laurie headed in from Navarro’s cross – a goal which could prove to be group-deciding. The Gorilas made no comeback here, limited by the capacity of their formation, they leave empty-handed and are now three points behind Llamedos’ coveted second place.

Group D

Ricohs Roar (59.680 – ÖSK) 0-1 Club Buenos Aries (68.027 – Everton1977ace)

Mightily impressed with RR after last week, undoubtedly the most improved XCL side I’ve ever seen from one XCL to the next, last time they got to this stage they went out in a whimper and couldn’t score points for toffee, this time despite two sides of immaculate strength compared to theirs, they’re very much holding their own against such strong competition. It was a 451 lock-down here as CBA mimicked RR in formation, with that in mind this reporter fancied the visitors to have a chance with such an overwhelmingly stronger midfield. The first half whet the appetites of Ricohs Roar fans, a boring half leading to hopes that they could yet again held tougher opposition. But Stefan Måhlén put a stop to that, rescuing the Argentines from trouble with the only goal in what was a very equal game. Fortuitous for the visitors but fortune is what you need to thrive in this competition and CBA roll on, it looks a difficult one for Ricohs Roar from here.

Högsbo United (80.767 – RDS) 5-0 The Magic (55.626 – AriGold)

Bit of a mismatch here, The Magic are actually a stronger side than United technically but everything else points towards the Swedes direction including a maximum on the point-scoring table. They went 352 against their opponents’ 442 and it worked wonders immediately. From the start Abbiati produced a range of skills, jinking one way, then the other before unleashing a beautiful shot underneath Isabey for one-nil. Isabey’s day got worse, straining his back he was substituted for Gusten Bäck and the experienced keeper’s first task was picking the ball out of the entangled netting following Stu Preston’s fabulously flighted freekick. After a couple of near-misses, another freekick in another good position and Stu Preston made it three with another curling effort. Bernt-Åke Tjernström is relatively new to the offensive scene but even he got in on the act, crossing for Elvinsson to knock home goal number four and then Elvinsson grabbed a brace by rounding the hapless substitute goalkeeper and knocking the fifth home. Five star performance from Högsbo sees them through to the next round with ease despite only managing seven chances so their usual high conversion rate has returned, The Magic meanwhile bow out the tournament.

Group E

Gr8est Team (61.520 – Gr8Florin) 1-1 New Handyman II (68.151 – HKD)

So what is it then, passion or hot air from HKD? He’s certainly making my job entertaining with his complaint a game ratio but let’s see if his side could win here away at the Guardian Angels whisk-beaters. His side went 541 though so I wasn’t expecting an influx of goals here while the home side packed the midfield with a traditional 352. And it was a great side for the hosts, Freddie Lemieux sending his fans into paradise with a well-hit freekick from way out. The home side owned proceedings in the first half, the second half wasn’t so marvellous on their part though and similarly Sergio Aguero again early in the half, won a freekick and curled it into the far corner to make it one apiece, back to the drawing board for Gr8est Team. The rest of the second half was relatively passive however, no more goals, it finished one all, neither of these two have raised any eyebrows in the competition so far but it’s Gr8est Team who lead the points stakes between the two, five to NHII’s two. Oh surprise surprise, HKD led another Mick McCarthy style press conference with a plea to iwe for a super-uber youth talent, sweet.

KBM MXL Xperteleven (73.246 – Miziler) 1-1 RIO (67.651 – Andyman90)

RIO have been very impressive in the tournament so far but stopping them in their tracks is KMX who seem to have bored everyone off the ball so far in this tournament. This was a change of sorts though, the adventurous team were the one who had drawn their previous 0-0 – KMX had gone for a 352 and it was RIO who folded to the back with a 541, would we be subject to another nil-niller? It was a slightly exciting first half I suppose and one capped off by a fantastic run and hit goal by Gregor Ilworsky, fact: first goal conceded by KMX in the XCL so far. The second half swung in KMX’s favour then predictably and on 74 minutes Benny Fred shot home from inside the area to level the scores. Fact: first goal scored by KMX in the XCL so far, fact: first goal conceded by RIO in the XCL so far. And so there we have it, all this game has succeeded in doing is piercing the best two defensive records in the competition so far (or finally lighting up two previously dull attacks), for KMX it’s another draw but for RIO it’s another point towards them being the best ever side at this stage from the fourth tier of an xpert league or below, they’re really going well in this competition.

Group F

A.S. Feleacu (62.052 – Rapidistii) 1-1 Fists of FISO (69.959 – Cfcrule69)

Both these sides have been immensely impressive in the contest so far too, particularly Feleacu who likewise RIO aren’t even in the top Division of their xpert league. However FoF have done really well with a conveyor belt team and have confidently strode to point after point after point. They were stung early on by Feleacu here though who went ahead after just five minutes, Tadeu Farias knocking home from close range. A close first half finished Feleacu’s way but after the break FoF were certainly the stronger side! The second half wore on, the hosts getting more and more agitated, the visitors becoming more and more confident yet equally frustrated, it was getting tight as Feleacu couldn’t even get out their own half. With six minutes to go F0F were still losing but were handed a lifeline when Alexander MacLachlan earned his second yellow card for a deliberate handball as Feleacu continued to frantically try and clear their lines. For some inconceivable reason thereafter, Feleacu withdrew two of their best players for two youths, with ten men it tipped the balance and in injury time Richard Heitinga smashed a wonder volley past Milito for the game’s equalizer. Great action from the two sides summed up brilliantly by Feleacu’s manager, they didn’t deserve to win... but it was there in the palm of their hands... and feet yet it wasn’t to be.

RAD United FCB (68.225 – Raduccu) 0-3 B.S.R. FC (52.239 – DJ_Mourinho)

Both these teams are looking to get their XCL chances back on track having fallen behind the other two sides in the group and it was to be another battle between two ferocious midfields, a 352 and a 451. B.S.R. were reinvigorated after last week’s win and they continued their good form here, the fantastically named Chesda Gatphayak squeezing home the opener from an extremely tight angle on the slide. He first half was quite lethargic but the second half was much more energetic from B.S.R.’s point of view and Shane Grant doubled their lead with a fabulous strike. The third, the icing on a big cake for B.S.R., was scored by Yai Panomyaong (don’t they do serious names here) – the lone striker – to seal the points. Great going B.S.R., taking the fight to the top two as the weakest side going by the TTT scores of anyone else in the competition, so much for United’s strength...

Group G

CCCP (78.136 – Yuran) 1-0 PSG1 (66.909 – Wlodek_k)

So it was the second game of the double headers as first played second place in group G, who were level on points. CCCP had organised themselves in an orthodox 4:4:2 system, while there opponents had opted for the gold old 4:5:1, hoping to boss the midfield and come away with at least a point. The first half was as dull as dishwater with the game not seeing a single chance at goal. Despite the second half seeing 5 chances, 4 of which went to the home team, it took an 85th minute header from Bernhard Ulleberg to break the deadlock and ultimately give CCCP all three points. PSG made 3 very late substitutions in the dying moments of the game to give a run out for the youths, although no sooner had they come on, they were off again, so little experience gained today for them, but maybe a taste of XCL atmosphere. The result though meant that CCCP moved into first place and in pole position to qualify for the knock-out stages.

OnePiece (73.846 – Wiguel) 0-2 Cormorans F.C. (78.269 – Maurosenssimi)

Both of these teams were looking to take all 3 points from this game as they both sat 3 points behind CCCP and PSG1 before kick off. OnePiece having home advantage lined up in a 4:4:2 formation as did their opponents. The first half saw just 1 chance, falling to the away side, who were unable to convert and so both teams went in at the break deadlocked at 0-0. Cormorans made a double substitution in the 75th minute and the fresh legs seemed to have done the trick as just 2 minutes later Cormorans broke the deadlock through midfielder Brian Northfield. The game was put to bed in the 89th minute when Cormorans made sure of the points after striker Philip Bent grabbed a second. The win puts Cormorans third in the table, but level on points with second placed PSG1, while OnePiece are now rooted to the bottom, still on 3 points. OnePiece will need to pull out all the stops on Wednesday as they face PSG1 away from home, while Cormorans host CCCP.

Group H

Racing Forstäppan (58.752 – Van_Helsing) 2-0 Barcelona of Sweden (61.922 – Kautsky)

Still without a win in group H and with only 1 point, Barcelona of Sweden were fast running out of time to give themselves a fighting shot of progressing to the knock-out stages. This week they were away to the team that they had grabbed their only XCL point from the week before at home. Forstäppan lined up at home with a 4:5:1 formation while Barcelona went 4:4:2. It was Forstäppan that leapt out of the starting gate first as they broke the deadlock in the first minute thanks to a header by Javier Cambiasso. However, things took a turn for the worse for the home side as thy suffered a red cross injury to captain Roy Lampard. The home side though were always in control of this game from the off and despite the early injury, it did not loosen their strangle hold of the game. Forstäppan enjoyed 8 chances at goal, while Barcelona were denied even 1. Cambiasso finally put the game to bed in the 86th minute with a long range shot, however I feel Forstäppan may have been a little disappointed that they didn’t score more. With the team in second losing, the 3 points gained in the match, not only gave Forstäppan their first win in group H, but has now lifted them in to second place.

Vikingarnas BK (56.145 – V00peter) 1-2 Huge Pythons (69.915 – RichardFenn)

The express train of Richard Fenns Huge Pythons team was headed for Vikingarnas BK, with Fenners looking to hold on to his good start. Vikingarnas lined up in a very attacking formation of 3:4:3, while the Pythons opted for old faithful 4:5:1 and it was Fenners’ team that struck the first blow. After a fine cross from Al Giles, midfielder Mika Witt headed home the games opening goal in the 17th minute. Huge Pythons enjoyed a decent first half creating a couple of chances, while their opponents were stifled out and created nothing. The second half saw the Pythons double their lead after just a couple of minutes thanks to striker Leighton Lipscombe. Vikingarnas managed to create a couple of chances, but were only able to grab a consolation goal in the 90th minute when Martino Pecchia scored from long range. The result of todays game, coupled with the remaining fixtures, means that Fenners will take his team to the knock-out stages. Meanwhile, Vikingarnas now slip to 3rd in the table.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So what does part two of this two part series have in store? Well let’s find out shall we starting again with Group A and working chronologically.

Group A

Fianna fishermen (59.172 – Dochawkes) 2-1 Modest FC (54.761 – James.)

To put the pressure squarely on the two giants of this Group, the fishermen had to beat Modest FC who have been on quite a ride in the competition so far. The hosts went for a 352 which seems to be the norm when a side wants to guarantee victory while Modest modestly chose a 442, not a wise choice usually when facing 352’s. Unsurprisingly the visitors found themselves a goal down just six minutes in to this one, Pavel Malyavkin getting the famous touch on a Kovalev cross to nudge the fishermen ahead. The fishermen pressured their opponents throughout the half but one frantic foray of energy saw Lee Ridgewell leave the fullback for dead and cross for Kevin Chapman to nod home the leveller – that wasn’t in the script! They couldn’t regain the lead in the first half and were constantly rebuffed by a lucky Modest defence in the second but pressure finally did tell nine minutes from time, Maksim Samoilov throwing himself at a deep cross to divert the ball past the magnificent Norelius. Panic stations at an ease, the fishermen are at least taking this to the final game while Modest bow out modestly (yeaah!)

Realgalacticos (83.178 – RealGalacticos) 3-0 Magico Parma (74.873 – Semme_88)

Immediate problems for the team withholding the second place berth, Semme wasn’t about to set his tactics, instead a default setting was used handing the advantage immediately to the Galacticos who headed this one with a 451 against their own opponents’ 442. It was clear Parma were missing their manager, this game was nothing like the nail-biting thriller between the pair in Sweden, lone-forward Giles Brammer instantly opening the scoring with a drilled finish. Parma’s resistance to a second was growing weary as the half grew on, Timothy Sims dived into a lazy lunge on Brammer who handed duties to normal club taker Aurelio Amaya to blast home goal two of the afternoon. He scored not long into the first half and he scored not long into the second half either, a hopeful delivery was seized upon by Brammer who made it three with his noggin to earn a comfortable three points for the Galacticos!

ROMANIAN CONSPIRACY: as conspiracy theories go, this is one with immediate evidence coming from the match reports, certain supporters or indeed ‘advisers’ of RealGalacticos and his team are pressuring the manager to let his guard down in the club’s last match against the fishermen in a move to send through a side who are thought of as the weaker of the two competitors upon Realgalacticos’ progression. Indeed the manager himself stated “last matchday is like a holiday day” – so could we see the Galacticos rolling over for the fishermen to send Parma out? A lot to take in from this one!

Group A standings:

Realgalacticos – 11 points, 7 GD
Fianna fishermen – 7 points, -2 GD
Magico Parma – 6 points, -3 GD
Modest FC – 3 points, -2 GD

Group B

Dream Pilots (71.291 – SuperSprint) 1-1 FC Vasaparken (75.571 – Vilmerito)

Another Scandinavian piece de résistance here or not so as the Pilots needed just a single point to go through while Vasaparken simply had to win or their XCL dreams were in tatters. The home side opted for a 451 here, quite defensive and certainly so against Vasaparken’s 343, it’s now or never I guess for the Swedes. And what a perfect start, so often Dream Pilots’ downfall in this competition has been their sluggish starts and they were caught off the clutch pedal here when Malte Hill went tumbling inside the penalty area over a rather clumsy challenge. The referee need not hesitate as he pointed to the spot and Dwight Morissey tucked it away into the corner. For the first time in the XCL this marked a half where Vasaparken were indeed on top and looked good going in at the break one ahead. However when they came out for the second half it was the opposition in control, winning all the 50/50’s and on 71 minutes Eric MacCarrick shot home from player of the group stage - Jukka-Pekka Öörni’s – through ball to send Dream Pilots into the next stage and dump Vasaparken out the XCL. Good effort from Vasaparken, unrewarding in the end but for the Pilots it’s red letter day, they’ve made it despite being in the thick of an almighty battle for the Xtreme League Title. Oh and SuperSprint was named MOTW on the morning of this clash so expect a fantastic report from Bejjita in the coming days...

Eagle Army FC (73.823 – Gazfraz) 0-1 Hellmoppers FC (67.390 – Gordons19)

Same as the last one in this battle of the British Isles, anything but defeat for EAFC and they will join the DP’s in the next round, the Hellmoppers had to win to keep their flame alight. Two very courageous formation choices here, EAFC gambling a 343 formation in a match they need only draw to ensure qualification while the Hellmoppers went for a banzai 433 themselves, interesting... It was actually a thoroughly enjoyable match, suspense lingering in the moonlight, no-one knowing just who would strike first. In the end just one strike could do it and it was Hellmoppers’ own Jimi Parlane who finished a wonderful flowing move with a delightful curling finish. It was end to end right up until the finish but it was the Hellmoppers who did just enough to secure victory and keep a small section of this group alive. Now EAFC must travel to DP for the point they need or hope Vasaparken hold the Hellmoppers, maybe just maybe this group isn’t over quite yet...

Group B standings:

Dream Pilots – 10 points, 5 GD
Eagle Army FC – 9 points, 4 GD
Hellmoppers FC – 6 points, -2 GD
FC Vasaparken – 4 points, -7 GD

Group C

Mirandela Gorilas (62.297 – Theacher) 1-2 Angered Ghettostars (74.456 – MagnusGbg)

Putting a smile on my face so far in the competition are the Ghettostars for their immaculate representation of the Golden League, the only time they’ve been stopped is when a side stuck ten men behind the football and somehow ground out a 0-0. A similar five man backline was in operation for the Gorilas in this one but given they needed the point to make a late charge for the next round, they stuck two up front hoping long balls would pay off. The Ghettostars with the luxury of any manner of superstar to choose went with a 352 unsurprisingly. The Gorilas were certainly making a game of it, not giving the Ghettostars a look in and with only a couple of minutes of the half left, Kelsey Weatherall produced a sublime freekick which nestled in at the near post, incredible! The second half and the Ghettostars were angrily woken from their slumbers, keen to make amends after a sluggish first half they bombarded the home side’s goal with every offensive player itching to make an impact. It looked to be a case of too much yet too late again for the Ghettos but with sixteen to play Senpai Yoshida stole in and knocked the ball past the limbering Suskic. The Gorilas were hanging by a thread by this stage, a thread cut loose by captain Kurt Kutz, the tough tackling centre half in the AG side meeting an Ingledow cross with a great bullet header to deliver AG another three points and leave MG’s existence in the competition hanging by a thread. The Ghettostars go through however, and on this evidence must surely be ranked amongst the favourites for winning the whole thing.

Bad Habits (58.960 – Soso_lucky) 0-0 Athletico Llamedos (70.427 – Cyprus)

The Llamedos form chart seems to have been neglected of late after Cyprus (greedily) decided to humph everything into all three competitions the Llamedos were still in, unfortunately his plan failed and the Llamedos are out the UL Cup. Still the XCL knockouts beckon with a draw now being all that’s needed to hoist the Llamedos through, Bad Habits had to win to keep this one alive. A 541 for the hosts though lacked all promise and Cyprus was onto it with a 442 of his own. The expected snorefest was occurring, certainly for the first half as the referee’s notebook seemed to have more touches than either side’s striker(s). It was the same story for much of the second half, a little bit of itty-gritty passion here and there before Christian van Nistelrooy decided to try and single-handedly spice the flavour by getting himself sent off for a reckless challenge. Fortunately for him, his side were able to hang on for the precious point needed to see the Llamedos through and bid the end of Bad Habits’ XCL fling. Good going Llamedos, that form will need a seeing to before the next round though!

Group C standings:

Angered Ghettostars – 13 points, 10 GD
Athletico Llamedos – 8 points, 0 GD
Mirandela Gorilas – 4 points, -4 GD
Bad Habits – 2 points, -6 GD

Group D

The Magic (55.623 – AriGold) 1-2 Ricohs Roar (60.639 – ÖSK)

Can’t stress enough how much RR needed to win this, the whole xpert world is behind this lot to stop it being a walkover for the two big teams just like in Fianna fishermen’s case too. Here they played pointless Magic in the bottomless pit but a Magic who were also keen on putting at least a point on the board before the competition’s out. A 352 for the Magic whole Ricohs Roar went ahead with a 433, very gutsy which is what we like at this stage of the competition! The first half was a tense, nervous 45 for both sets of supporters, not a nose hair to split them as the two went in at the break. The second half started with AriGold’s side on top and they took a very well deserved lead when Jan-Ove Ingleman squeezed one in from an outrageous range and suddenly Ricohs Roar’s dreams were hanging in the balance. Suddenly all change though, seven minutes later a short corner was played in and Robert Hyde got the glancing touch at the near post to send the ball screeching in, 1-1!  The last nineteen minutes was a non-fancy, no-holds-barred affair, ultimately it was the saviour Nadee Sinpai who met Borggren’s cross with an athletic header which crept in at the corner to give Ricohs Roar the three points! A great ending to this one, RR live to fight another day.

Club Buenos Aries (66.781 – Everton1977ace) 1-1 Högsbo United (83.261 – RDS)

So Everton, it is finally time to prove yourself by taking on the reigning champions, we now know CBA can’t qualify whatever they do but they can put one and three quarter feet in the final by defeating this lot, a draw leaves them in a decent position, a lose will certainly make this group tasty going into the final day. Everton again sticking with the tortoise ‘slow and steady wins the race’ option of a 451 while RDS was a bit more errr Swedish? With his own 352. This reporter was very impressed with Buenos Aries in the first half, finally showing some determination, some endeavour, a will to reach the next round but unfortunately for them Högsbo stood strong and they went in goalless at the break. The second half was a lot more balanced, Högsbo showing the sort of football which made them XCL Champions last term but against the run of play in the second half, Buenos Aries went ahead thanks to a Rinor Devolli long range effort with 18 minutes left to play. It looked gone for Högsbo, Buenos Aries had made that final swing to tip the balance and finally all but bag their place in the next round but no, agonizingly for the hosts in injury time Owen Aran looped the ball over for the arriving Terence Squire who planted it past Cornforth to tie the match at 1-1! Fantastic ending to an exhilarating match, still some work to do for Buenos Aries even if they are still in a great position to qualify, Högsbo’s approach to the final round of matches will be interesting in regards to Galactico’s although they have said they intend to play an honest game and they’d rather have the ‘more challenging’ competition in the next round so credit to them but in any case, this group still has one matter to resolve yet.

Group D standings:

Högsbo United – 13 points, 12 GD
Club Buenos Aries – 8 points, 2 GD
Ricohs Roar – 7 points, -2 GD
The Magic – 0 points, -12 GD

Group E

New Handyman II (65.472 – HKD) 3-4 KBM MXL Xperteleven (70.943 – Miziler)

KMX have got to be the most boring XCL side of all time, got to be and they didn’t look like raising the impression barrier here with a 451 while their much frustrated opponents, HKD and NHII went for a 352. Contrary to prior matches involved KMX though; they actually looked competitive here and shocked the hosts by going ahead very early, Miguel Cabrera finishing with ease from close range. KMX were enjoying the better of the half, their opposition unable to draw many of the KMX players out of position and were caught out again just before the break, Görgen Stenhammar thriving on a lot of room ahead to bend the ball past Tedoldi for 2-0. It soon became three – goodness me – Stenhammar crossing for Taveira for the third goal, is this some mutant alien KMX I see? One goal in four games and then three in the first 45 here? The lead looked unassailable but for all KMX’s wealth of defensive talent, this was put to the stone by the bottle of the New Handyman team. Emerging from the break they immediately went to task and on 56 minutes experienced striker Valério Alvim headed Noel Jansen’s cross into the back of the net to make it 1-3. It soon seemed like whenever a team went forward, the net was ready to bulge and Alvin reduced the deficit further by deflecting a cross-shot past Bain. NHII continued to press but KMX scored the vital goal with another Taveira strike with eleven to play, 2-4 now surely safe and sound. But the home side refused to give in and Putte Brorsson nicked in, in injury time to get the KMX heats racing again. But at long last, the full time whistle blew and KMX had won a thriller 4-3, saving all their goals for one whole game. The result didn’t go down too well in the Netherlands, yet more angry words directed towards Miziler’s tactics and some swearing too added on top but the Malaysians were happy and they had to be cut short before they started renouncing Miziler as their new God.

RIO (68.439 – Andyman90) 1-1 Gr8est Team (59.661 – Gr8Florin)

What could these two do to top that? Well RIO seem to be lost in crawling towards a place in the next round at the moment while Gr8est Team’s second place was now under threat from KMX and they’d have to make sure their fellow Dream leaguers wouldn’t be left dismayed at the end of the Group Stages. They played 352 against RIO’s 451 – predictable as all RIO needed were 2 draws to guarantee their place in the next stage. However they’d need a goal for this as after just nine minutes yet more penalty area mischief was spotted red handed by the referee and Benjamin Coppinger easily buried the spotkick. RIO were much improved after this and Gr8est Team just sort of folded back into a trance, not doing much in the way of stopping RIO come forward or attack the other goal. They held out for the first half but slap bang in the middle of the second Gregor Ilworsky powered a header into the top left corner to leave RIO with a share of the spoils. RIO have made it ladies and gentlemen! Gr8est team and KMX both play each other next week and can’t both win leaving RIO a place in the second round while it’s a shootout between the other two for a place in the second round next week, crunch times!

Group E standings:

RIO – 9 points, 4 GD
KBM MXL Xperteleven – 7 points, 1 GD
Gr8est Team – 6 points, 0 GD
New Handyman II – 2 points, -5 GD

Group F

B.S.R. FC (54.518 – DJ_Mourinho) 2-1 A.S. Feleacu (61.465 – Rapidistii)

I make no secret of the fact one of my favourite group stage moments was that last day rush which say Skeninge IK and Ursvik IK reach the knockouts and this season’s group F reminds me just about that, two clear leaders making strides but all of a sudden an Ursvik like team – in this case B.S.R. – makes a couple of giant leaps which throws everything out the balance. Today B.S.R. were facing one of those leaders, Feleacu who have impressed consistently so far in this competition and here, B.S.R. went 442 against their opponents’ more exciting 352. Another close first half saw its gauntlet opened by Tadeu Farias who got the better of his marker to stoop home and head in Sonny Aravena’s cross. Their defensive woes continue to embarrass them and hear again they saw their lead wiped out in a matter of minutes, Car-Gustav Ring finding it just too easy to waltz past a couple of lame challenges, pick his spot, and score to make it one each. All up for grabs in the second half and it wore on, and on, and on – nerves jangling, watches tingling and then at the very end of the ninety Ring pranced his way into a goalscoring position and stroked the ball home to give B.S.R a priceless three points. From doom to redemption, three wins on the trot has seen B.S.R. sail to above Feleacu and possibly top of the group, depending on the score in the other game.

Fists of FISO (76.027 – Cfcrule69) 1-1 RAD United FCB (63.826 – Raduccu)

Suddenly after starting so strongly, United’s position in the group was suddenly under threat and not winning here could end their prospects for good. FoF were in an ideal position but they could do without last day heroics of their own, a win would certainly help ease the nerves in their camp. 442 for the hosts, a 352 for the visitors praying a strong midfield performance would win them the day and it worked wonders for them to begin with, sloppy FoF defending leaving Adan Humphrey a free shot at goal and boy did he take his chance well, flicking it low into the corner leaving Vasa in the FoF goal with no chance. United did appear to command the first half but were helpless to prevent Petter Kildahl dashing in and heading home a corner for one all. The match started to peter out a little bit until the 56th minute, Earl Stuart receiving red for a horrifying tackle on Thobias Ung which even left Vinnie Jones in a state of shock. A quick re-shuffle was needed but surely United would be on the back foot now? Apparently not, they were more of a match for FoF throughout and looked the more likely team to snatch three points. Alas no, a draw followed which buries United’s second round chances in sand and leaves FoF probably needing a win next week against B.S.R. to cement their places in the round of last sixteen so all in all, not a great draw for all parties.

Group F standings:

B.S.R. FC – 9 points, 3 GD
Fists of FISO – 8 points, 2 GD
A.S. Feleacu – 7 points, 0 GD
RAD United FCB – 4 points, -5 GD

Group G

PSG1 (66.477 – Wlodek_k) 0-0 OnePiece (73.858 – Wiguel)

PSG could do with a win to restart their charge while OnePiece need a win to stand a chance of going through... so why the latter went with a 541 of all formations God only knows. The home side were lacking in the brains department too it would seem, only a 451 so we’ve got nine defenders and two attackers, guess how this one worked out? Yes of course, PSG had more of the possession but even despite this they were facing the immovable brick wall armed with an arsenal of weapons. OnePiece had a few bright spells but none too many to cause any sort of damage to the scoreline and this predictably finished 0-0 and just like the last game, a 0-0 does neither side any favours, PSG were praying on CCCP doing them a favour while OnePiece were all but out the tournament.

Cormorans F.C. (76.109 – Maurosenssimi) 1-0 CCCP (77.863 – Yuran)

Qualification for CCCP could be assured by a win here, a draw would also see them through (they didn’t know that at the start of todays play), lose and there’d be a rethink before their final group game versus OnePiece. Cormorans have done a B.S.R. and made a quick burst towards the knockouts, another win would come in handy here though, anything less and they’d be up against it in their final encounter against PSG. Hosts went 442, nothing special there while CCCP my goodness went with a 541 – Yuran choosing to consolidate his side’s point tally rather than attack for glory? CCCP actually shocked me, they are obviously equally adept playing 541 as they are 343 but despite their patient build-ups and all their chances they failed to break the mobile object which is Muhammad Ilyamanti. Then wouldn’t you know it despite being fairly lacklustre throughout the whole match, Machmod Larsson crossed for Wilbur Heskey to head in what could turn out to be one of the most precious goals in the club’s history. Absolute daylight robbery was picked up on by Yuran but he needn’t worry, his side need only draw or not lose by over half a dozen goals to OnePiece to see themselves through to the next round, whereas if Cormorans draw next week then that plays both them and CCCP through, the scene’s set perfectly for the final round in Group G!

Group G standings:

CCCP – 9 points, 4 GD
Cormorans F.C. – 9 points, -2 GD
PSG1 – 7 points, 3 GD
OnePiece – 4 points, -5 GD

Group H

Huge Pythons (68.440 – RichardFenn) 1-1 Racing Forstäppan (60.171 – Van_Helsing)

I don’t know if they knew it but the Huge Pythons were already in the next round but the mathematics was so complicated that it was probably best for Fenn’s side to pick up something here and make sure. Racing are still in the thick of it against the group leaders, and sort of result coupled with Vikingarnas not winning would be a good day for them otherwise they’ll be up against Vikingarnas in the final day showdown. Fenn’s men were out in a 352 system while their opponents lined up in a commonly used successful formation at the moment, the 451. Yet it was the Pythons who got to work quickly and Dirk Bulman bundled them in front using head, shoulders (knees and toes) to give the Pythons the lead. It was an impressive showing from arguably the most impressive side in the group stages so far to go in at half time ahead, but in the second half they felt the full brunt of attacking force hitting straight at them. And it wasn’t long ‘til Racing were level, Garth Sant getting something on the end of a bouncing ball to tie the scores at 1-1 and Racing could now smell victory. However it wasn’t to be as Rowling stood firm meaning Racing’s place in the next round would not be secure yet and they may even have to win their final game depending on what Vikingarnas and Barcelona of Sweden did.

Barcelona of Sweden (58.835 – Kautsky) 1-0 Vikingarnas BK (56.318 - V00peter)

Barcelona of Sweden, to say they’ve been poor so far in the XCL is an understatement, they simply haven’t gotten going and Vikingarnas haven’t been too clever in the XCL so far either so this was a whoever dare dreams contest. And in the first half neither side looked like they wanted to challenge for that second spot, second grade entertainment and goalless, a feckless 45 minutes if truth be told. In the second half though, wow, Barcelona of Sweden came into their element! “Attack, attack, attack” roared the crowd and who were BoS to disobey? They laid siege on the Vikingarnas goal and on 63 minutes Björn Bostrand hooked the ball past Asagud in the visiting team’s goal to give Barcelona the lead! And that’s how it stayed, Barcelona of Sweden are off the mark and that by playing some fringe players admits their manager leaving a three way shootout to one golden ticket to the next round to go, exciting times.

Group H standings:

Huge Pythons – 11 points, 6 GD
Racing Forstäppan – 7 points, 2 GD
Vikingarnas BK – 4 points, -3 GD
Barcelona of Sweden – 4 points, -5 GD

That’s your lot folks in this week’s bumper reports, again apologies it isn’t split up but we felt it best if they were put together after a hectic last week personally for me, robster indeed most the reporters :P but now it’s back and next week I’ll have a full report on the last day action in the group stages of the 27th XCL!
