Penalties disaster ends cup run |
Viking South Utsira looked like they had got their season back on track in midweek, breaking a run of four draws in all competitions by easing past Mauchline Belles 3-1 at Ragnar Rock in Division 1b. The Blood Eagles took advantage of a generous performance from Belles keeper Chloe Hutton to net every shot they had. Elza Klovning's penalty being cancelled out by Emma Anstruther but both Reidun Bohne and 38-year-old sub Yasmine Klovning striking late on to heave Viking back up to 2nd place in the table at the halfway mark and shunt the Belles back below the relegation line on goal difference. Just when it had looked like the latter might finish the day above VelvetAndroid's team.
It was a first competitive meeting for the two clubs in nearly four years, since Viking won out 3-0 on aggregate in a 3rd-round Xpert Ladies Cup meeting in Season 61, and the first league encounter since Season 53 when the then-Gastele shared a division (1a) with VSU for the only time. It is far from the longest wait for a reunion, though: those previous league games followed a full 12 years and 42 seasons after the first time the clubs crossed paths, in Season 11's Cup. There is of course merely a week to wait until the next game, with the immediate return fixture up next.
The Utsirans' participation in this term's cup came to an end on Saturday, however, in frustrating fashion. Having come away with a 1-1 draw from last weekend's trip to Kurag Clava in the opening leg of the 4th-round tie, Viking led on aggregate when Anneke Hovland piledrove an opener on the half-hour. Katja Mesaric's leveller on the hour meant the game again ended 1-1 though, and extra time could not separate the sides. Then, even though the resultant shootout began with Elza burying her spot-kick, Anneke, Mette Schibstedt and Gabriela Klovning disastrously all missed their penalties in succession to send Viking spiralling out 3-1.
