Anniversary win for VA as VNU stay top |
Viking North Utsire marked 10 years of VelvetAndroid's managerial reign by maintaining top spot in Division 3d with yet another hard-fought victory on Monday. The visitors were old rivals Wollaston Phoenix, with whom the Norsemen shared Division 4g back in Season 36 but then took another six years to cross paths with again, before the pair got into regular clashes in the last two and a half years.
It took the Utsirans nine attempts to get their first win over Phoenix, but this became their third consecutive such victory at Dogger Bank within the last five total meetings, after lead striker Conrad Austrheim fittingly fired the only goal of the game in the 73rd minute, the 165th of his career. Given that all-time top scorer Kent-Arne Fridholm's landmark of 179 includes at least some goals from before the club's current boss took over, it might well mean Conrad already has the record for most scored during the Android Decade -- the actual anniversary fell the following day.
Remarkably, every single VNU league fixture this season has been decided by a single-goal margin, with even their lone defeat being by 2-1 and their five wins coming by 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, 3-2 and 1-0. Brough Unt's last-ditch 2-1 comeback win at Dronfield FC this week kept them 2nd in a competitive division by two points, meanwhile, with Dronfield dropping back to 4th behind Fatties & Foreigners.
We now reach the midterm doubleheaders, which for Viking starts with an away trip to SteauA89. By strange coincidence the two clubs also shared that same Season 36 in Division 4g which also featured Wollaston, then even more extremely took more than seven years to again end up in the same division, with just a single 2017 cup meeting interrupting the long hiatus before they met up once more in Div 2b five seasons ago. Tomorrow's match will be thus just the sixth encounter in total.
