VSU back in the mix in supertight Div 1a |
Viking South Utsira revived their hopes in Division 1a with crucial hard-fought win at Mollys Whoo Elite this Tuesday.
On a day where the top four faced off and drew both games to stymie their momentum across the board, it was Viking and Tirilän Tasavalta who started the day 5th and 7th respectively who capitalised, TT beating Juves Tjejer 3-0 to leapfrog them and right out of the dropzone, while Viking had the ostensibly easier game on paper but a harder job in practice.
The Mollys have still only won once this term but changed managers last month and have presented a markedly harder prospect for opponents to deal with. And so it proved for the Utsirans, as they fell behind after only 16 minutes to Emmanuella Cognard's header, before striking a key psychological blow when Anneke Hovland crashed in a leveller on the stroke of halftime. The second half saw both sides have chances to win it, but in the 88th minute VSU sub Irja Klovning connected with a Tove Kvalvik corner and forced the ball home for a vital three points.
That result relegated MWE, despite their efforts, but leaves the entire rest of the table covered by just six points with merely three games to play. Nobody has won more than half their total matches, nor more than two of their last five; nobody is unbeaten at home or away. Viking are bizarrely top of the home table but this their first road win of term has only just lifted them off the foot of the away table to 6th -- as well as to 4th in the actual table. With a mere 3 points spanning the top 5, it should be a truly enthralling run-in with promotion and relegation both a real prospect for at least the middle three of Spearwives of Ygritte, Viking and Tirilän.
Next up for the Utsirans is a very tough away trip to current leaders The Peach Blossoms. They then host Queers United -- who presently are behind the Blossoms only on GD -- the following week, before finishing up away at Tasavalta.
