A week of triumph and dismay |
Knights of Cydonia FC's week was a decidedly mixed one. The league game against Kruger FC turned out to be a lot easier than expected, we thought we were in for a tough time against them but in the end they didn't even set tactics and played every player out of position. That could be crucial in the long term of this season. We won 5-0 to go two points clear at the top of the division.
Unfortunately, any hope of being able to build on that and maintain momentum, while not entirely gone, did take a serious sledgehammer in the cup this week. Our task wasn't exactly an easy one as we were against another Division 2 side, Wollaston Phoenix. So already we knew this was going to be a big step up in class from the other cup matches and we couldn't skimp on it as a result. We do have a much stronger side that Wollaston Phoenix but they have the same points total as us this season having won, drawn and lost the same number of games. It wasn't going to be an easy game by any means but this game just turned into a complete disaster.
Somehow with a tactical advantage we failed to create a single chance while Wollaston dominated the game, creating all the chances and scoring the winning goal with Ljube Madzoski. It gives them the advantage to take to our place next week but our own chances of scoring have been severely diminished by the injury to Dani Massa. Massa was injured in the 15th minute and will be out for 15 days. The injuries haven't been as bad as they were last season but there's still been a fair few of them. What is more concerning is that although Knights have only conceded two goals so far this season, in both occasions the opponent has gone on to win, Drangliec on the opening day and Phoenix today. We still have the opportunity to turn this around next week but it does put us on the back foot.
This is going to disrupt the league campaign as next up we have Jimporia. While this will be the first meeting between the two clubs, we've played Jimbo plenty of times before at his old side and this is the very definition of a banana skin in every sense of the word. Indeed, the last two games we played against his old side he took 2 points from us and now he's at a team where the senior players are a lot stronger. In that sense, losing Dani Massa robs us of a critical goal scorer and puts a serious dent in our promotion challenge.
We did have a mostly positive record against Jimbo's previous side but once again go into a double header with a major injury that could affect the entire outcome of the season. We suspect they will now fancy their chances of pinching a point against us.
