A game of inches |
Savo Popac's seventh goal of the season was his biggest by far. In the 71st minute, he got a free run on a beautiful through ball from Tasko Bucic, and he slotted it into the back of the net for the go-ahead score in Friday's top-of-the-table clash against Partick Thistle FC.
Eight minutes later, the visitors seemed to equalize on the strength of Sergio Burgos after a corner kick. But he was ruled to be offside, if only by a slim margin. They would not find the net again.
"They say it's a game of inches," said manager stormstopper after the match. "It's a tough call to go against them, but this referee's one of the highest-regarded and I think he made the right call."
Blackstone has now cleared its biggest obstacle to promotion back to Division 4. They lead the league by 6 points with two matches remaining, so a win or draw against either SC Olympique Lyon or Mersin Idmanyurdu FC will secure it. The first time around, Blackstone defeated those opponents 6-1 and 5-0, respectively.
"I think we're ready for the next level," said Popac. "We weren't ready last time. But this season's been a fever dream for us, and I think we've made so many strides. I can't wait to clinch it so that we can start making our plan of attack."
