Cup win completed, Blues maybe unlucky in League game?
Pompey had their Euro League Cup 1st Round 2nd leg tie at home to cahlsea omar (Strapex), to 'look forward' too, this time last week - as the team have seemed dormant. Holding a 4-0 1st leg league, McGarvey eagerly took the chance for some more game time for his 'fledglings' (if you count anybody under 23 as such...).
So a debut for midfielder Edorta Cenitagoya (18) in midfield, to add to the 3 playing their very first game last week. However, only one started alongside him: Christían Lindenberg, who had come on as a sub last week. Jesse Tarrant and Les Patmore had to settle for making cameo's off the bench this time.
It was Italian striker Ludo Iuliano (actually, ALL Pompey's strikers are Italian), who did 'the damage' - netting a 15 minute hat-trick between 20 minutes and 10 before half-time. Karl-Heinz Schuster on the hour and a debut goal for the aforementioned Cenitagoya put the gloss on the win. 5-0 (9-0 on aggregate), chances were 7-0 in Pompey's favour.
Portsmouth have drawn old foes Rousset Rangers in the next round, but have no idea if their (long-time) Manager is 'on the case' or not...
In the League, it was a 2nd successive draw for McGarvey's men, and they were grateful for a late goal to get that. They faced Strength of Character (Bladesrus) at Fratton Park and just about got a point in a 1-1 draw, thanks to an excellent bicycle kick from Iuliano; the goal coming with 6 minutes left, and just 2 minutes after SOC looked like they were going home pinching all 3 points thanks to (Matthew) Delbert's deft free-kick. (4-1 on chances to the Blues).
It's "early doors", but it looks a tough division. Next up is the Cup game tomorrow, then Pompey face one of their oldest friends/foes in BK Rangers at Fratton.
