It's a very sombre time at Baston Fen, home of Lincolnshire Curly Coats. A day long dreaded has come a little sooner than hoped: a combination of two bad injuries, dreadful form impact from a 5th Round Cup exit and worsening league form have precipitated a mini sell-off. The key departure was the Curlies' longest serving ever player, beloved goalie Hugh Callender.
Hugh was the Curlies' longest serving player ever with 358 competitive games. During this time he was elected to the Xpert Eleven 90 times, and captained it 14 times. His career save percentage was 69% and he was divisional MVP twice.
Hugh managed seven goals - not bad for a goalie - and for a player with a bit of a mouth on him and a penchant for gamesmanship, among his greatest achievements were never being sent off, and only being yellow carded six times, in his whole career. One of a kind, he will be missed although at least Callender stays on as goalkeeping coach.
Also sold was veteran midfielder Nick Twigg. Despite only arriving at the Fen at the age of 29, he was a crucial part of the midfield through the team's best seasons to date, making 160 appearances with 42 goals and 37 assists.
LCC will probably now be relegated, but they need some time to rebuild.
