There was drama at Figgate Park this evening as the Sphinxus FC manager chose to sack two of his players a couple of hours before their cup clash against Division 1a's Hellcats Harriers. One of the two players, a junior of some middling talent, had only been signed a week earlier. Nobody at the club was willing to say exactly what led to the decision but rumours will soon spread.
In the game itself, Sphinxus set up defensively to try and restrict Hellcats Harriers from running over them as Los Santos Benders had in a friendly a few days earlier. The new 4-5-1 set up worked well, after conceding early on Haris Carrick struck back for Sphinxus and scored the club's first competetive goal. Eventually though, the quality difference showed and Harriers won 3-1.
"It's a great result for us. I know there was some expectation we'd play some of our younger players today but I just couldn't allow us to lose a second game 5-0 in a row so I went full strength. There will be plenty of opportunities to rotate in the league through the season, today we wanted to give them our best shot and we did.
"It's a shame about their captain getting injured. We'll be playing the second leg carefully to avoid any further injuries for either club."
Next up for Sphinxus is a match against Harp Rovers FC
"It's another big game and we're looking forward to getting the league campaign underway. I think Rovers will be one of the top teams in the division this season so they're a tough first opponent."
