A dream come true |
Borgis FC has reached the promised land of the Xtreme League top division
It has taken almost eleven years but the arduous journey for Borgis FC has finally reached its climax and the rewards are pure, unadulterated joy for everyone involved with the club. Manager Adam Moran described the feeling of beating Methane Rovers 1-0 in the Xtreme League play-off on Tuesday as 'sheer ecstasy' and the 'greatest achievement of my life'. Moran will now lead Borgis into a first ever season in the top flight of the Xtreme League.
Borgis FC went into the play-off against Methane as underdogs but as ever in these types of games, anything can happen. And with the smell of unpredictability in the air the Borgis eleven seemed to be boosted by it with every inhaled breath. They simply took the game to Methane, challenging for every ball, and winning most of them. Methane Rovers could not deal with the tenacity and passion they were up against and had to retreat. It meant Borgis dominated large portions of possession as they attempted to break through with that million dollar goal.
However, Methane stood tall and proved why as a club it was in this play-off match. In the league, they had a similar amazing defensive record to Borgis having only been breached nine times. And so with both defences looking bullish, minutes ticked by with neither team able to break the deadlock. The game petered into extra-time, as it did the last time Borgis was in a high profile play-off game. In that scenario it was Bauhaus BK that came out on top and won promotion to Division 1 at Borgis' expense.
But this was a different Borgis team, one that is galvanised by all the past pains and successes; over ten years of a culmination of the highs and lows. Today would be their day no matter what.
And after 93 minutes Borgis finally got a breakthrough. Star striker Snorri Pétursson - the man with 62 goals in his last 82 appearances - was of course the man to find it. After weaving his way through a bus of defenders in the opposition penalty box, he was unlawfully brought down and awarded a penalty. Pétursson brushed himself down, took an enormous breath and calmly slotted his spot kick into the bottom right corner. And that was that...Borgis had beaten Methane Rovers and won a place in the Xtreme League!
After the final whistle we spoke to manager Adam Moran on the pitch:
"I can't quite believe it, Jeff! We've done it! This is the greatest achievement of my life in the world of Xpert Eleven and I am so so happy, it's just sheer ecstasy inside me right now. The players were fantastic tonight and deserved to win. We've been knocked back over and over during the years but nothing and no one could take it away from us tonight.
"Of course the hard work starts now. This was just the easy part!! [laughs hysterically]. We probably have the weakest team in the league and everyone will be looking forward to playing us. But you know what I am just going to enjoy every minute. We've had such a good run over the past five or six seasons and now we can finally say we are the playing in the highest division. Who knows how long it will last? There will have to be some big changes with the squad over the next couple of seasons but for now we will enjoy our reward. Thank you and commiserations to Methane Rovers."
It's unrealistic that Borgis will be able to challenge for the Xtreme League title in season 55, but stranger things have happened. To be continued...
