The return of the Tiggy |
The rain poured on an October weekend morning as the quagmire that was the Newton Ousers pitch overfilled once again and sent mud pouring into the Ousers dugout.
'Cumbs,' muttered Martin Neverwin, as he forced his hands further into his suit jacket pocket. After no wins in division 4, managerless and no points on the board an overflowing pitch was the least of the club owner's worries. 'Maybe, at least with a muddy pitch we might gain an extra defender,' he though to himself as he wandered the touchline, 'either that, or I need to hire a lifeguard for the new leisure pool'.
As he passed the dugout and a mountain of mud cascaded over the top of the plexiguard and onto the head of Neverwin, he felt the frustration boil over.
"That's it," he yelled, throwing his jacket to the ground, "send for the Tiggy."
Across town, with a work laptop open on another piece of overtime work, a retired xperter's phone began to ring.
"Really?"
"Are you sure?"
"'But I'm retired."
"Has anything changed?"
"Well, I guess I could come back but only on the condition you don't expect me to remember the games every week."
"Yes, I'm not bothered by mud."
And with that, Tiggy returned to the Master League.
