Cup curse finally exorcised |
Sometimes clichés don't ring true. You get what you put in, you reap what you sew, fortune favours the brave, 3rd time lucky and all that nonsense.
Well it was 7th time lucky for us tonight. After SIX, yes that's six exits from the cup at round 3, six in a row, we finally, at long last negotiated safe passage to round four of the cup.
Some teams don't give care about the cup. We do. We have done.
Six times.
And six times we came up short but all six times we've been treated very cruelly by whomever draws those wee slips of paper from the hat.
All six times we've been drawn against teams ranked hundred of places higher than us and aside from one solitary occasion we've been right in the mix but marginally missed out. There was one occasion when we took a team about 700 places higher than us to penalties. And still lost.
So when the draw was made this time we were again up against a vastly superior side. But they fielded a reasonably young side. I read the tactics report before kick-off and we had nailed the lot. Surely this time, right?
Well, we had more chances, more possession, scored the first goal. Missed chances but 1-0 from the home leg aint so bad. And then it happened. A 90th minute penalty to them. 1-1. Away goal theirs and the 3rd round curse was about to cast its dark shadow for a 7th season on the spin.
So a week later, we go again, as Stevie would say, and this time it's a drab affair; one free kick from our defender within 20 minutes being the only noteworthy incident. But sometimes all it takes is one little moment. One second. One kick to finally end six entire seasons of frustration.
