Magnificent Matchsticks stop the music
Scottie Foran steps from the goal line and up to the penalty spot. He is gamekeeper turned poacher as the Matchstick's goalkeeper takes his side's fifth penalty kick of the shoot out. It's already sudden death because opponents Folklore Flamenco have missed one of their penalties; so if Foran scores Matchstick Men are through to the next round.
"Foran's always a bit of a joker and he started fussing around with his gloves as if he was trying to take them off," laughs Matchstick manager Tony Brazil, "making the point that he won't need them after this kick. Cool as cucumber that kid, and he was loving the boos from the Folklore crowd."
Referee Hugh Cango warns Foran, who then starts executing a series of star-jumps as if he is still in goal. Then he lands and kicks at the same time, sending the ball spiralling into the top corner of the net. Folklore's keeper never moved, mesmerized by Foran's monkey-business.
"Unbelievable," Brazil is too stunned to cheer, "magnificent. We've beaten the team second in the top division, and they were the second top seed left in the competition. Letting a keeper take the fifth penalty is madness they said. Look who's talking now. We have stopped Flamenco's music because, thanks to Foran, we are on fire."
