[- Deliberabundum -]
The competitiveness in the Dream League is like no other league currently. We're closing in on a highly unusual fourth straight game against Sankt Gallen 1879 this coming Sunday, and last night we had to bid farewell to the cup, much too early just like many seasons prior.
The fourth or fifth round has sadly proved to be our limit the past seasons. Sure, we haven't had the firepower of the top top teams, but man have we had bad luck with the cup draws over the years. If it wasn't the almighty Yarmouth Town five-ish seasons ago it was the nuclear bomb that is Sporting C. de Portugal. And now we ended up facing Sankt Gallen whom will most likely end up in 2nd place in the league behind the aforementioned Portuguese powerhouse...
You can look at it from multiple angles, but at the end of the day it still stings the same simply because we're a team that should be able to get to at least the quarter-finals every single season. But, I guess that is difficult when you end up facing the coming champions as early as the 4th round.
In the first leg against Sankt Gallen we did literally all we could. Tactics were flawless to the outmost degree, but with subpar form on certain players and a suspended Hamish Grimmond we were left lacking necessary attacking prowess. Grimmond had very oddly been sent off in the league game before the first leg, merely his second red card in 235 games for the club.
Then, in the second leg, we went in full force with Hamish back in the line-up and once again a very strong tactical performance. I managed to man-mark the opposing team's playmaker in both legs and the total amount of goal chances ended up 8-5 in our favor and yet we couldn't manage a win in either meetings.
This season was in many ways our last chance for some kind of greatness. The defense is not in a good state, neither age-wise nor performance. Why they're lacking the individual prowess is more or less a mystery, specially looking at their skill on paper. The midfield and attacking options will still be stellar next season but the imbalance the back three will cause to the team dynamic will not suffice for a title run.
It's deeply saddening when you arrive at the realization of simply not being good enough.
