Last hurrah for VNU as drop looms
Viking North Utsire ground out a somewhat fortunate win over Ultimate League whipping boys Square Hammer last Monday to keep their top-tier survival hopes technically alive with two games to play, but common sense says it is all over bar the shouting.
One positive from the game was that Viking's two younger forwards each scored. 22-year-old Xavier Klovning's first-minute opener proved a false dawn however as the Norsemen could not conjure another shot until 24-year-old Viktor Austrheim finally made the game safe in the 71st -- and they were outshot 4 to 2 across the 90 minutes by a Hammer team who may be pointless but still have more than enough class in the side to cause everyone else problems.
The real sucker-punch came in the closing stages however, where senior midfielder and by far the Utsirans' most effective player this season Haakon Austrheim was carried off with an injury that will likely rule him out of the crucial penultimate fixture tomorrow at The Outcasts. With a four-point gap to safety and a massive 14-goal deficit to even the nearest teams Partizan Belgretna and Glorious Bastards, it is thus plain that VNU are, on every level, only mathematically still in it.
The chief interest tomorrow is thus seeing whether last season's promotion companions Cardiff Dragons can cap their stunning debut campaign in the top flight by wrenching the title from Jesus and his Pandas' iron grasp when the pair go head to head in the cauldron of 26 Bank Street.
