After more than four years away from Xperteleven, Angry Toffees managerial legend Magicdoyle has returned to the club to see if he can replicate the success of years past.
For those of you who may be too young to remember; The Angry Toffees were first taken over by Magicdoyle in June 2009 (Season 15). Gooners as they were known then, were languishing at the bottom of the 7th division and going nowhere. Magicdoyle invested both his time and his money into the team, taking over the board in partnership with Reggie Reggie sauce entrepreneur Levi Roots. The pair of them changed the team name (The Angry Toffees), moved grounds (The Angry Arena) and proceeded to build a team to take on the giants of the Power League.
Success was not instant, despite 2 wins and a draw in the final three games of the season, it wasn't enough and the Toffees were relegated to the bottom tier of the Power league. A glut of young players were brought in, and despite a young squad, the team were promoted back up to the 7th tier at their first attempt. The following season they won their league and found themselves quickly in division 6. Competing at this level proved difficult with such a young squad, it took Magicdoyle five seasons to progress further but progress they did. Within four seasons of finding things difficult, they moved from division 6 to division 2, winning division 6:24 and 3c along the way.
But the league was not where Magicdoyles strengths as a coach really lay, the cup competitions were the pull for the purist and the ever increasing Toffee's fan base. In season 27 the Toffees punched well above their weight, taking on teams in higher divisions and slaying them accordingly. They were eventually knocked out in the quarter finals that season despite being in division 2 but that was just the start. In season 28, although still in division 2b. They went all the way, beating all comers and winning the power league cup.
This proved to be the pinnacle of Magicdoyles reign. Competing in the Xpert Champions League the next season proved difficult for their small squad, and although they were promoted to the 1st division, they were knocked out early in the cup (3rd round) and subsequently knocked out of the Xpert Champions League in the last 16 with a whimper.
Season 30 proved difficult too and proved to be Magicdoyles last. The league was where they particularly struggled only achieving a mid-place finish. Although they did okay in the cup (7th round), tensions were forming around the club. Levi Roots spoke publicly about his disappointment that the team had not progressed and the there was a rumour that Magicdoyle had lost the dressing room. Upon the final whistle of the final league game, Magicdoyle, left the ground, got into his car and disappeared from The Angry Toffees and Xperteleven.
Since Magicdoyle left, The Angry Toffees had some success in his predecessor Voogla, who took the Toffees up to third in the Power Leagues top tear, but he only stayed for two seasons. In the next 13 seasons The Angry Toffees had 10 different managers as Levi Roots tried desperately to find the right person to take over, but the slide was epic. The Angry Toffees now find themselves in the 5th tier of the power league with four loses from four games, disgruntled players and only a small pot of money which Roots looks to invest.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man! In a shock development and chance encounter Levi Roots met Magicdoyle while they were both getting their cars serviced. While waiting for far too long in the garage lobby, Roots convinced Magicdoyle to return, recalling tales of power league cup glory and youth team development of the past. Angry Toffee fans forums have since gone into overdrive. without any statements coming from the manager himself, fans are eager to see for themselves if the news is true and if the return of the legend will happen. Magicdoyles return debut is against fellow division 5:26 strugglers Buzz FC and already the away allocation of tickets is sold out.
