The value of a top class striker

In a (xpert) world where the game's so called greatest boffins have dabbled in many team-building strategies, one that is becoming increasing popular is heaping skillbars into the defence and midfield, and including a strikeforce of just youth forwards, whilst playing many a 4-5-1 formation.

Fabbyulous was however quick to point out the importance of what a top class striker can provide you.

"It might be the hip and trendy thing to all play like Barcelona - or Scotland - in a 4-6-0 formation with a 'false nine', but good old fashioned top class strikers can offer a team so much. And for that reason I am so grateful we have Ivan here, what a talent he continues to prove himself."

Dwong's top forward is the aforementioned Ivan Arnelius but just why is the striker held under such high esteem at Lovudden?

Tuesday's away encounter at Boca Juniors Lionjah told all.

By his own lofty standards, Arnelius had struggled to affect matches in recent weeks after a fine gluttonous patch of form in the goals department at the beginning of the season. Against Lionjah however, it was all change.

The striker headed Dwong ahead on 24 minutes with a superb, bullet header. Dwong were pegged back by Tyko Westin's effort but that was the extent of the light to Lionjah's flame. In the second half, it turned into the Arnelius show. The striker showed great intelligence to thread the ball through to Campilho to edge Dwong back ahead before making it 3-1 himself with another headed goal.

He completed his hattrick on 79 minutes with - yes you guessed it - another headed goal. Arvi Roni completed the rout with a thunderous effort from way out but the day belonged to Arnelius whose three goals took him to seven for the season and back to the forefront of the Division 2c goalscoring charts.

It means for the five of the last six seasons. Arnelius has scored over 6 league goals over the course of a 14 game season and you know what they say, goals translate into points?

But why is the youth forward approach becoming such a growing trend? Fabbyulous has no idea.

"I cannot for the life of me understand why some managers are so against developing a forward and would rather spend their time recycling youth strikers. How many goals can they possibly bring in? Certainly nothing like the goals which Ivan is bringing in."

"Ivan himself is only 25, he has so many seasons left in him and could easily surpass the goalscoring record that stands at the club, well he's only 18 goals short so I'd be disappointed if he didn't!"

"His contributions this season have earned us 8 points, with another forward in our team it is unlikely we would have had those 8 extra points and after today, how crucial does that look?"

Indeed, after Dwong's win coupled with Imortal only managing to draw at lowly Sheffield, Dwong have sprung to the top of the table for the first time all season! Not a bad time to hit the top... but can they stay there?

"It is unlikely we will be able to hold top spot between now and the end of the season; if you compare our fixture list to that of Imortal or Portugale it is obvious that ours is the trickiest to navigate. But in order to have a chance you have to put yourselves in the mix and these five straight league wins have done just that! It is now of paramount importance that we defeat Oakways in the league next week too. If we are to stand a chance against Portugale then we need to be going into that game in a good run of form, so we cannot fail to beat Oakways, otherwise our chances of going up will become ever slimmer!"
