Mothers Day Looms |
A time to reflect on years gone by, rewarding your mum and thanking her for the years of love and care she's shown you. Perhaps family meal out is on the cards where mother dearest is centre of attention, or stay at home and ma put her feet up while you slave over the hot stove in the kitchen, insisting on doing the pots afterwards while a couple of glasses of wine are richly deserved by your unbearded parent.
Or grab the last bunch of diesel smelling flowers from the garage forecourt, baulk at paying nearly £4 for a terrible card, and attempt your best handwriting while using a biro with a chewed end while resting the flimsy poem filled card precariously on your knee moments before you let yourself in the house after a night on the lash with your mates.
The token hug is accepted, followed by the usual "ooooh, I remember when you wrote your first card in crayon," and "remember that huge bunch of flowers you got the other year" as you think back to how you had to sprint out of the cemetery that Sunday morning years ago as even though thhe mourning widow was crying you'd heard the rumours that the vicar carried a shotgun in the boot of his old Honda Civic.
Eventually you trudge off upstairs and despite wanting a quick tug before sitting down to a tedious family meal, you can't risk it as grandma will be round soon and remember when she let herself in your bedroom last time?
There's only one thing keeping you going all day and it isn't the box of Cadbury's Roses you're going to destroy nor the After Eight Mints of which you have absolutely no intention of removing the empty wrappers. You are of course only interested in one thing and it ain't your mum; tomorrow's league game in the Xpert International. Somehow you survived the relegation rat race and your team, though pleasing on the eye in terms of shiny special qualities, severely lack the skill nor aged experience to dodge the bottom three again. Or do they? We are fancying our chances again this season; perhaps not so much another year wiser, though certainly another year older. A couple of thumping Cup wins sees form and confidence through the roof, and with a number of teams in Division 6:43 clearly at odds with their managers and team selections, The Sennawooki Shotguns will be aiming high this campaign.
