It has been a while for the fans of Girls Down Under to see a press release or even just a short notice. Today marks a special day in the teams history, though, as a new manager was unveiled and was nobody less than the current Classic League Cup Champion. Why did he choose the Aussie girls might just be the most interesting question of them all, so: why?
"I was looking for a new league with a little longer than usual seasons. When Bromis then planted the idea of the Ladies in my mind, I was on the hunt for a new team and found Girls Down Under, a team in the really lower regions of the league, but with one unique set-up: mostly players from their own academy and a little bit of money in the bank. Furthermore they were created in season 1! With that in mind it was easy to take on Aussie's old side, who seems to have had the same principles in his head."
What are the plans for the future?
"Most importantly is the investment into the academy again. The team doesn't look great at all at the moment, apart from a few bright sparks, but the team has once been in division 2 and I want to get them back there!"
Encouraging words from the new man at the helm for all Aussie fans. Additionally to that the manager has brought back the old shirts and, if he can unveil them in the big piles of dust and dirt in the current stadium and club offices, he would also bring back the former team logo according to rumours. Retro seems to be the new way to go at the Girls Down Under.
A little look back in the history books show one of the oldest teams around, but bad management got them in a bad shape. When the Xpert Ladies were created, the team formerly known as "Me Gusta Cono" took part in Division 2a, but hanke, the creator, and his successors gurra D, Maldin3 and CROATOLOCO let them slip all the way down into division 5. With the switch of management to Aussie in season 8, the team was looking up for once and in his 30 (!) seasons at the club, the Australian manager stabilized the club and got them up into division 3 at the highest point. Unfortunately they dropped down into division 7 a season ago and with the current table in division 7:24, a club low finish of 5th is to be expected.
Nevertheless the target seems to be onwards and upwards from now on with the new manager looking for the title and promotion in the upcoming season as well as some new recruits to his side. Meanwhile the target is damage limitation for the season, because the form of some players are rock bottom.
If there is one positive thing, though, it's current results: with a 2-0 win over Rossendale FC, the Aussies presented themselves for their new Austrian manager, who, right after taking charge, lead them to a 7-0 victory over Reserve Team I. Next up is a tough trip to The Hermiones, but a breeze of fresh air seems to have a hit a new unearthed gem in D7!
