First Goals! |
.....
Achillies Heel scored their first goals of the season after holding high flying FC Bast-i-Vast to a 2-2 draw on Friday. The home team opened the scoring in the 12th minute when young midfielder Felix Onetti latched onto a cross field ball from Nicolae Zamfir and powered home a long range shot past the opposition keeper.
Bast-i-Vast equalised on 28 minutes before taking the lead in the 60th from a set piece free kick. But despite their defensive approach, the home team appeared undeterred by their vastly superior opponents and pressed forward. Their reward came 10 minutes later when the young striking duo combined with 18 year old Kyle Hatfield sending over a pinpoint cross for 19 year old Eric Peters to power home with his head.
The home fans went delirious and were urging their team to continue pressing, but the Heel returned to their shell to hold out for the draw. It was a creditable performance from the young team against much stronger opposition, and Manager LFC73 was full of praise for his up and coming players.
"While Vast had far superior possession, we hit them hard from the off and this seemed to somewhat put them off their game," he said. "Our tactic was to play from the back, and I have to give much credit to the two young strikers up front. They ran themselves ragged all day, and were justly rewarded when they combined for the second goal.
"Our largely defensive style this season will not see us create many chances which will lead to few goals, so to get two from this match was a bit of a bonus. We'd gone seven matches previously without scoring, so it was quite a relief when we first nailed one early on. While it wasn't a totally complete performance, the lads stood up to the test and showed true grit and determination."
This gives the Heel 5 draws on the trot in the League, and whilst they're still in the bottom 3, does the Manager have any hopes of possibly sneaking survival?
"Not really," he replied. "I think we've got lucky a few times, and the quality of the opposition will be difficult to surpass. We suffer a bit from compatibility issues which indirectly affects our performance at times. Perhaps if we could overcome this just once and nick a win in one of our remaining home games along with a few more draws, then who knows? It would be nice to remain in Division 5 as it's good experience for the young players and aids in their development, but perhaps a season or two in Division 6 might not be so bad."
No matter what the outcome, the young Achillies Heel team have certainly made life difficult for most of their opposition to date, and if they can continue on at this rate, then perhaps they could be a team to watch for the future!
