Final day collapse crowns Wigan champs |
There will be a few Borgis FC fans moping around today similarly to those in Brazil still heart-broken after their countries woeful display in the World Cup. After leading Division 5:18 since round 3, Borgis swaggered into the match against Wigan Roamers last night knowing all that was needed was a draw, just one solitary point and Samir Culjat would lift the club's fifth divisional title and give automatic promotion to Division 4.
The dream soon turned into a nightmare for Borgis, in fact it took just 30 seconds for Wigan to find the back of the net and set up the mauling that was about to happen. Borgis hit the crossbar minutes to shake Wigan a little but it did nothing to alter their mood - they were here to win themselves their own fifth divisional title, and boy did they turn up.
Angel Bujía made it 2-0 shortly after but Wigan squandered chance after chance. The 3-man defence of Borgis couldn't handle the pace and power of the wing attacks and were penned in. You could see the stuffing was knocked out of the players and half-time was needed. But instead of coming out after the break with a different mindset or a tactical change, the players looked spent. After a gruelling campaign of leading the chasing pack, the players seemed to realise they had thrown it all away.
Cuthbert Shore made it 3-0 after 81 minutes and the game was dead and buried. Borgis were lifeless, and you could see manager Adam Moran's frustrations on the sideline. Playing in front of the home crowd they had a fantastic chance to create their own history but they lacked the magic ingredient. Moran waved to the bench for 36 year old retiring Jordy Cresser, if the team wasn't to win at least Cresser would get his chance to play his final home game and say his goodbyes. But Cresser wasn't looking for a relaxing 10 minutes. He was pumped and ran onto the field trying to fire some passion into the players.
Just 3 minutes after coming on Cresser leaped high into the air to smash in a header from Asprilla's cross, complete testament to his career, a true fighter. We will have more on his career in the coming days. But for Borgis there was one final nail in the coffin when Belarmino Freires made it 4-1. The whistle went and Wigan Roamers were crowned champions after they went to the top spot for the first time this season. Manager Shlloyd shook Moran's hand with great respect before storming the field to celebrate with his team. Well done Wigan! For Borgis, they have to settle for second and get a second chance tomorrow night in the play-offs.
After the game, a soaked Adam Moran woefully entered the press box and slumped into his chair.
"No questions, guys, I'm a little delicate. I have to say a massive congratulations to Wigan Roamers, they chased us all the way and in the end they proved to be the better team. You look at the stats now and it's their league, I'm obviously so disappointed because I thought we'd done enough. To finish 2nd with 33 points is staggering, but again that is testament to Wigan and Borgis. Shlloyd has been doing agreat job and I am happy he has finally won his promotion to Division 4. For us, we can still do that with our game against F.C Cartagena Madrid.
No matter what happens I am extremely proud of the players. Last season we were shocking and should have been relegated, so to turn things round so quick is rewarding. And we have been in great company this season, Dwong Athletic and Tsavo West End are top teams ran by top managers."
"Do you think Fabby jinxed you by saying you would win?"
"Of course not. I've loved the banter this season more than any other. Usually managers tend to be quiet so this season we've had lots to joke about. Early on I came out and said a few things about his team and he went on a bad run so you could say I jinxed Dwong? It's all swings and roundabouts and I'm happy we are good friends. But now I have to go and prepare for Thursday's game. Auf wiedersehen!"
