No Striker? No Problem! |
Coming into this weekends fixtures Heeds had a bit of a problem, well a big problem really. It was the irritation that we didn't have a forward to play with Borner suspended and Kospitatiatatat whatever sold earlier this season. I know, we do have Somdetch Men, but as he is a 3 skilled nobody hes as good as not even being there.
So what could we do? Play our 3 skilled no hoper? Play without a striker? Buy in a striker for one game? Well we didn't take the easy option of going to Russia, buying a 32 year old hasbeen and ending up not scoring in the next game, oh no! After having a look at the squad there was already an obvious replacement to play up front, it was, of course, our top goal scorer, and as crazy as it sounds, the divisions top goal scorer, our DEFENDER Emilio Rufete!
Now granted he is our free-kick taker, which is how he has scored a few of his goals this season, but not all of them have been freekicks. He has taken this division by storm and lead the goal scoring charts for a good while now, consistantly hammering them in week after week while playing from defence. It is probably one of the main reasons why, despite having the strongest defence we have had probably in about 14 seasons we have had one of the worst goals conceeded records for this club in a long time (it was only a few seasons ago we nearly went the whole season without conceeding with the same back four). So the call went out to our Amoruso like player, it was time to stick him up front with his 'play anywhere' special quality and let him run riot where he should probably be playing anyway.
As expected he didn't let the club down. We romped to one of our best results so far this season, a 4-0 win against a solid squad with Rufete getting a goal and an assist. At the same time we managed to keep a clean sheet with him playing where we clearly fancies himself as a player. Was it coincidence? Is he just one of those centrebacks that likes to make bad runs then leave his fellows defenders picking up the peices as the opposition counter attack? I'm not sure, but one thing i am sure about, Borner's going to need to up his goal scoring ratio to win his place back from a defender!
